UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OAMILLO BRUUN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MUSTACHE-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,836, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed September 19, 1894. $erial No. 623,520. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CAMILLO BRUUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mustache-Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the'same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in a mustache-guard for cups, glasses, and the like; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cup having a mustache-guard constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a mustache-guard. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates the holding-plate of theguard, which is curved to conform to the contour of a cup or drinking-glass. The said plate 1 is provided along its upper edge with an inwardly-turned flange 2, parallel with the plate and located a little distance therefrom, the space or groot e 3 between the plate and flange corresponding to the thickness of the edge of the drinkingglass. Secured to the flange 2 and a little distance below its upper edge is the guard 4:, in which an opening 5 is made adjacent to the flange and about midway between its ends.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that this mustache-guard can be easily applied or removed from a drinking-glass, and will be firmly held thereon by reason of the engagement of the edge of the glass between the plate 1 and flange 2. In use the guard at effectually prevents the mustache from contact with the liquid in the glass, while the opening 5 permits the passage of the liquid.
In making a mustache-guard of this construction I prefer to stamp the entire article from one piece, as shown, and in this case the flange 2 will consist of two thicknesses of the sheet metal lying flat against each other, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
I claim as my invention- A mustache-guard consisting of a curved plate to fit the exterior of a glass or mug and having an inwardly and downwardly turnedflange at its upper edge providing a space between said plate and flange to receive the edge of a glass or mug,and said flange being bent upon itself and then inwardly to form a guard approximately at a right angle to said plate, and an opening in said guard approximately midway between the ends of the same and adjacent said flange, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OAMILLO BRUUN. Witnesses:
HARRY COBB KENNEDY, N. E. ELKINs.
