Description
(N0 Modem 7 J. K. PRIEST. GAGE OR GUARD PLATE FOR HAIR GLIPPERS.
No. 532,335. Patented Jan. 8, 1895.
WITNESSES HO WASHINGTON b. C.
NITE STATE PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH KfPRIEsr, on NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
7 GAGE OR GUARD PLATE FOR HAIR- CLIPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1\ To. 532,335, dated January 8, 1895. Application filed November 9, 1894 Serial No. 528,316. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH K. PRIEST, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Nashua,
in' the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage or Guard Plates for Hair-Clippers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to improvements in gages or guards for hair clippers and it consists of a plate constructed with spaced tooth like fingers or bars and having upwardly extending side retaining flanges and provided with a spring for automatically retaining the gage or guard in position on the comb plate as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. A
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification; Figure l. represents a top plan view of a hair clipper with my improved gage plate attached thereto. Fig. 2. representsa perspective view of said gage plate. Fig. 3. is a transverse vertical section through the clipper and gage plate. Fig. 4. is a side elevation of the endof the clipper and the gage plate; the latter being partly broken away to show the position of the retaining spring, and Fig. 5. is a bottom plan view of the end of the clipper with the gage plate applied to the same.
A in the drawings, is the comb plate of an ordinary clipper; B, the cutter plate; 0, D, the operating handles and F my improved gage or guard plate. The said plate F is intended both as a guard for the teeth of the comb plate and also as a gage for regulating the length of the cut made by the clipper according to the thickness of said plate. The plate is formed with spaced fingers or bars f which have upwardly projecting heads f at their outer ends, the inner sides of said vheads serving as a stop for every other one of the comb teeth to abut against whenthe plate is applied to the clipper. The gage plate F is v also provided, at each side, with an upwardly extending flange d which is turned inward at right angles at its top and thus retaining ledges are formed between which, and the by remowing the gage plate.
plate proper, the comb plate is slipped, when the gage is to be applied.
The rear upper edge of the gage plate is preferably provided with a depression e to form a shoulder f and in said depression a preferably fiat bow spring H is secured by means of a rivet; the front edge of said spring bearing against the shoulder f so that it cannot turn from side to side and it has its two free ends h bent upward to engage the under surface of the comb plate when the gage is slid thereon and thereby hold said gage firmly in position by reason of the friction between the ends of said spring and said comb plate.
When the gage is in position, every other one of the comb teeth is in the center of the the work of an instant to slip the gage plate upon the comb plate and into operative position and no readjustment or fastening of screws is necessary as the gage automatically retains itself in position by means of its retaining spring and can be as readily removed when so desired.
Difierent thicknesses of metal for the plate F can be emyloyed to regulate the length of the cut and the clipper can of course be used in the usual manner to make a very shortcut It will also be seen that the gage when in position is an effectual guard to the comb and cutter teeth and thus said teeth are protected from injury, when the cutter is notin use, by being dropped or accidentally brought in contact with any object.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A gage or guard plate for hair clippers comprising the plate proper provided with rigid retaining side flanges and spaced fingers or bars, and a flat spring secured to the gage plate for retaining said plate in position on a clipper by the friction of its upwardly extending ends upon the under side of the comb plate, substantially as described.
2. A removable gage plate provided with rigid retaining flanges on its side edges, spaced fingers or bars having guard heads, and a fiat spring secured to the gage plate and adapted, when the gage is in position on a clipper, to bear with its outer ends against the under side of the comb plate with pressure'sufficient to retain said gage firmly in position, substantially as described.
3. A gage or guard for hair clippers, comprising a plate proper provided with rigid retaining side flanges, spaced fingers or bars having guard heads, and provided with a depression near its rear edge, and a flat bow spring secured to said plate and seated in said depression and having its bowed ends extending upward, substantially as described.
4:. A gage or guardplate for hair clippers comprising a plate proper provided with space fingers or bars, rigid overhanging retaining side flanges forming respectively parts of the side fingers, and a flat spring se-
