BRAKE-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,824, dated January '7, 1896.

Be it known that we, JOHN WESLEY Cook and CHARLES SCOTT, of lWoodburn, in the county of lllarion and State of Oregon, have invented anew and useful Improvement in brake-Rods, of which the following is a specication.
Our invention relates to improvements in that class of brake-rods which have one end secured to the operating-lever on the box or body of a wagon and its other end secured to a lever on the running-gear, and it has for its object to provide means whereby one end of the rod can be easily and quickly removed to permit the removal of the box or body from the run ning-gear. 1
It also has for its object to provide means whereby the rod can be quicklyv and readily lengthened or shortened.
A still further obj ect of the invention is to provide an attachment which can be quickly attached to the brake-rod to form an extension thereof and which can be quickly removed from the part of the wagon to which the end of the brake-rod is to be secured.
The invention consists of two plates or jaws, one provided with studs and the other with apertures to receive the studs, and a sleeve on the shanks of the plates or jaws for locking the said plates or jaws together.
The invention also consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described-and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure l is a side elevation of a wagon, showing our improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same, and Fig. i is a plan view showing the plates or jaws separated.
A is a brake-rod having one end pivoted to the operating-lever G on the wagon-body, and B our improved attachment or extension thereof, and which is attached to the lever H mounted on the running-gear of the wagon C and connected with the brake-bar in the usual way. provided with the Shanks a2 b2, respectively. The cylindrical shank a? of the plate or jaw a is out away at its junction with the plate or jaw, as shown at al", and is provided with a stud a projecting from its fiat face, and upon this cut-away portion of the shank a2 the semicylindrical shank b2 of the plate or jaw l) rests, said jaw being provided with an aperture b3 to receive the stud ai. The jaw or plate a is provided with three studs c d e proj ecting from its inner face, which studs enter the apertures f g 7L in the plate or jaw l). To securely fasten the outer ends of the plates or jaws a b together the stud c has its upper end notched or formed into a hook o2, as shown, so that when it enters its aperture and the shanks of the said plates are secured together, as presently describech the said plates or jaws will be firmly and securely locked together.
For locking the inner ends of plates or jaws together so as to permit their ready separa.- tion when desired we mount upon the shanks a2 D? of the plates or jaws the sleeve D, and between the sleeve and the coupling-nut E on the end of the shank a2 we place the coiled spring F, so that the sleeve D will be forced forward upon the said shanks and the parts locked together.
The brake-rod A, which has its end screwthreaded, screws into the coupling-nut E, so that Jthe attachment or extension can be readily secured to the brake-rod, and the other end of the attachment is connected to the lever H.
To connect the attachment to the lever H, the parts having been disconnected, the plate or jaw d is placed on one side of the lever with one of its studs projecting through an opening in the lever and then the other plate or jaw l) is placed on the opposite side of the lever with its aperture f engaging the stud c of the plate or jaw a, whereupon the sleeve D is pushed back against the tension of the spring F and the shank l) carried into engagement with the shank a2, the studs ot plate or jaw a entering the corresponding apertures in the plate or jaw l), when the sleeve is released and7 being forced forward by the spring upon the Shanks, firmly locks the parts together. Any one of the studs can be made to'engage the opening of the lever, so that IOO this rod can be adjusted in length as desired. The rod can also be adjusted by means of the coupling-nut E.
It Will thus be seen that by our improvement the brake-rod can be quickly and readily connected or disconnected from the lever Il to permit the Wagon-body to be removed from the running-gear or for any other purpose.
It Will also be seen that by our improvement We employ no bolts or nuts to become loose or lost, and that the rod can be readily and quickly adjusted, as to length, when desired. Y A
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An attachment i'or brake rods comprising two plates or jaws, one of Which is provided with studs and the other with apertures to receive the studs, means for locking the plates or jaws together, and a coupling for connecting the plates or jaws to a brake rod substantially as described.
2. An attachment for brake rods comprising two plates or jaws, one of which is provided With studs andthe other With apertures to receive the studs, means for locking both ends of the plates together, and a coupling nut on the shank of one of the plates or jaws substantially as described.
3. An attachment for brake rods, comprising two plates or jaws, each provided with a shank, one of the plates or jaws being provided with studs and the other with apertures to receive the studs, and a sleeve on said shank for locking the parts together, substantially as described.
et. An attachment for brake rods, comprising a plate provided With a shank and with studs, one of which has a hook shaped end, a second plate provided with apertures to receive the said` studs and with a shank resting upon the shank of the first named plate, and
` a sleeve on the said Shanks, substantially as described.
5. An attachment for brake rods, comprising a plate provided With a shank and studs, one of which has a hook shaped end, a second plate provided with apertures to receive the studs and with a shank resting upon the j shank of the first named plate, and a sliding and spring pressed sleeve on the Shanks, substantially as described.
6. An attachment for brake rods, a cylindrical shank having a cut out portion and with studs, comprising` a plate provided with studs one of which has a hook at its end, a second plate provided with apertures and a half round shank fitting in the cut out portion oi the first named shank, and a spring pressed sleeve on the said shanks, substantially as dcscribed.
7. An attachment for brake rods, comprising a plate provided With a cylindrical shank having a cut out portion and with studs, one of which is provided with a hook at its end, a second plate provided With apertures and a half round shank fitting in the cut out portion of the rst named shank, a sleeve on the Shanks, a coupling nut on the shank of the first named plate, and a coiled spring on the said shank between the sleeve and nut, substantially as described.
8. The combination With a brake rod, of an attachment adjustably secured to the rod to form an extension therefor, said attachment being provided with two plates locked together, one plate being provided with studs and the other With apertures to receive the studs, substantially as described.
