- sections to be joined together and the edges thereof adapted'to belocked together by an UNITED STATES PATENT OF IC JOSEPH DICK, or CANTON, OHIO.
STOVEPlPE-CQU PLING.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 627,987,dated July 4,1899- I Application filed May 2, 1898. Serial No. 679,565. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH DICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Couplings, of which thefollowing is a specification. I
My invention relates to an improvement in stovepipe=couplings; and it consists of a metal lic band made to conform to the shape of the eccentric locking-lever having a journaled connection with one .of the free edges of the band and a coupling-rod having a hinged connection with the other, by which the band is firmly bound around the sections of the pipe, securing-them together and to the clampingband, as is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Figure l is a perspective View of my invention, showing the band locked in position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the elbow-band.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the lockingband and clamping device. Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the locking eccentric lever. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective View of the hinged connection of the locking eccentric lever to the clamping-band. Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of the traveling nut. Fig. 7 is a detailed perspective view of the clip adapted to be attached to one side of the clamping-band and to engage the connecting-rod.
, In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts.
A represents the clamping metallic band, which may be made either circular in form or to conform to the shape of an elbow, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Upon the right-hand side of one of the free ends of the clamping-band A there are attached clips B for the purpose of engaging the hooked connecting-rods O, which are screw-threaded at their free end. Upon the left-hand inner side of the clampin g-band there are attached, by means of rivets, the journal-plates D, having east integral therewith the open jaws d to receive the j ournal-lugs e, cast integral with the eccentric clamping-lever E, which is substantially U- shaped in form and has cast upon it or intoengagewith the oppositely-projecting lugsfi.
. gral therewiththe projecting lugs e, which 1 formed upon the traveling nut F, which is provided with a'screw-threaded opening f to receive the screw-threaded end of the hooked connecting-rod G. j
In operation the connecting-rods O are enss f gaged at their hooked-ends with the clips B.
The traveling nut F is then screwed ontothe free end of the connecting-rod. The clamping eccentric leverE is then seated in the journal-plates D and bent forward, so as to receive in the projecting lugs c the lugs ff of the traveling nutF. The clamping eccentriclever E is, then pressed down against the clamping-band, carrying with it the traveling nut F past the center and the connectingrod O, and securely locks the joints of the pipe to each other and to the clamping-band. To release the joints,'the lever is lifted up and over the center, relieving the clamping band and permitting the withdrawal of the joints. To adapt the clamp to the various sizes of pipe, the coupling may be lengthened or shortened by means'of the traveling nut F.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- I In a stovepipe-coupling, the combination with the hingeless clamping-band having journal-plates provided with integral jaws upon the outer face of the inner lap of said clampingband, eccentric clamping-levers provided with journal-lugs e c and projecting lugs e e, the clips B 13 secured to the outer face of the outer lap of said clamping-band, the connecting-rods O C engaging the clips B B, and provided on their threaded ends with traveling nuts F F having projecting lugs f f resting in recesses formed by the projecting lugs e e on the eccentric clampinglevers E E, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my handin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, JOSEPH DICK. Witnesses OHAs. R. MILLER, OHAs. M. BALL.
