SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 551 ,322, dated December 10, 1895. Application filed December 8, 1894. Serial No. 531,297. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK DANIEL KEEs, of Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Copy and Book Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to a new and novel combination copy and book holder, the object being to provide a light folding device that shall be adapted for use in schools and in private dwellings.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective of a copy and book holder embodying my invention, while Fig. 2 shows a front view thereof with a portion removed.

A represents a suitable holder, which is preferably square, and is of any suitable material, such as sheet-tin, which has its sides (marked 3) recurved, as well as its bottom 4 recurved, the sides movablyholding the rods 5, as shown in Fig. 2, while the lower recurved end 4. movably holds the front retaining-rod S, as illustrated. Cent-rally this blank A is cut so as to form a lap 2, and extending from this is another T-shaped incision which forms the two laps marked 1 1, these laps 1 1 and 2 being recurved and adapted to form apocket within which a drawing, copies, and calendar, or any other suitable devices may be removably held. Within these recurved end portions 3 3 is held the wire 5, the rear portion of which is bent at an angle and forms a leg, while the lower portion. is bent outward and forms a rest 7, which terminates in an upward portion 6, as shown in the drawings. Both the rods 5 are similarly bent and curved. IVorkin g within the lower recurved portion 1 is a hooked retaining-rod. 8, which is adapted to extend outward and is provided at each end with a hook 8. XVhile folded the legs 5 lie against the back of the blank A, the hook portion 6 extending in line with said blank, but when locked the legs 5 are carried at right angles to the body A, in which position the hooked rod Sis carried downward so that the terminal hooks of said rod encompass the straight portion '7, and so look these retaininglegs in their proper position.

NVhen used as a book-holder it is of course understood that the leaves of the book are held by means of the upwardly-extending portions 6, as shown in Fig. 1, where the outline of a book is shown in dotted lines.

It is of course understood that the face of the blank A could be used for advertising purposes, while the center, if desired, could be provided with removable memorandum tablets, calendars, or copies for reproduction.

Now, having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is

1. In a copy and book holder the combination with a main blank, said main blank being provided with outwardly and backwardly extending laps forming an open faced pocket, the edges of said blank being re-c urved to form suitable holders adapted to movably retain the leg rods, said leg rods projecting beyond said re-curved edges and forming in the rear a suitable supporting leg and in front extending outwardly and upwardly to form a suitable book holder, and a hook ended locking rod movably held within the lower re-curved end of said blank, said hooked rod being adapted to look over and secure said book holding projections, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a copy and book holder the combination with the blank, A, of an open faced pocket formed by means of the outwardly extending laps, l, 1, and 2, adapted to removably contain suitable copies, said blank being provided with the re-curved edges, 3, 3, and 4, and the hooked rods, 5, forming a leg, and provided with the book holding projections, 6, and 7, and the hook ended rod, 8, adapted to lock said book holding projections, all of said rods being movably held within the recurved edges, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
