MILK-CAN COVER.

Be it known that I, JENNY LAPLACE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new' and useful Ventilated Milk-Can, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements made in milk-cans used for the transportation of milk; and it has for its object, mainly, to provide perfect ventilation of the can, to exclude dust, flies, and insects, and at the same time prevent the contents from being thrown out.
To attain this end and object my invention consists in the described construction and combination of milk-can and cover as hereinafter explained, and pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, that form part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view of the milk-can and its cover constructed according to my invention, with the cover set into the neck to close the can. Fig. 2 is a side view of the neck and a portion of the can-body, showing the cover set for ventilation. Fig. 3 is a view of the cover separate from the can.
In carrying out my invention I make the neck of the can longer or higher than that on the ordinary milk-can used by the milkman, and I also give this neck the same diameter internally from the top or rim to the bottom where it joins the body.
The cover for the can is constructed, as shown in Fig. 3, with a closed top B and a cylindrical body B', the external diameter of which is the same as the internal diameter of the neck, and the iit of the body into the neck is so close or tight that the cover will be held and will remain in whatever position it is set in the neck, whether with greater or less extent of projection above the rim of the neck.`
In the body B are made numerous perforations or small apertures B2, beginning on a horizontal line bg, distant below the top of the cover about one-quarter the length of the body and preferably extending all around the circumference and down to the bottom. The top portion of the cylindrical body of the cover is thus solid or imperforate, and the remaining portion below is perforate or of such character that it allows air to pass from the outside to the interior.
In that position of the cover in the neck when the perforated portion is set below the rim of the neck, as illustrated in Fig. l, the can is tightly closed; but by drawing out the cover a greater or less distance from the neck more or less of the perforated portion of the cover-body will be exposed above the rim of the can, and through the perforations thus exposed the air has access to the interior of the can. The cover being tted tightly to the neck, it will remain in any position of adjust ment without being affected by the jolt or jar of the wagon during transportation or while being carried about on the milk-route. The cover as thus constructed is set in position by pressing it down or drawing it up in the neck by a slight movement, the can is tightly closed or it is given more or less ventilation, as desired, the dust or insects cannot enter the can, and the use of special means to protect the contents, such as screens or mosquito-netting commonly used, is rendered unnecessary.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a milk-can having a long neck of the Ventilating cover having a cylindrical body tted closely to said neck and composed of a closed or non-perforated top-portion and a perforated lower portion, as specified.
