Description

J. A. CONARD.
SANITARY CAP FOR DRINKING GLASSES.
APPLICATION H120 JUNE 1. 1914.
1,156,391" Patented 001. 12, 1915.
I/VVE/VTOR d amas J5, Coward JAMES ARTHUR GON'ARD, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
SANITARY GAP FOR DRINKING-GLASSES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. CoNARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Sanitary Cap for Drinking- Glasses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My present invention has special reference to means for covering drinking glasses and the like in order to exclude dust and germs from the contents thereof whensent from a dispensary to a consumer at a point somewhat distant, and the primary object of the invention is comprehended by the provision of an improved sanitary cap for drinking glasses especially adapted for use out of doors though not restricted to such use.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved sanitary cap for drinking glasses to protect the contents of the glass in the manner specified which cap, when fitted over a glass, will be retained thereon against accidental displacement and which will permit ventilation but at the same time reduce the possibility of the entrance of foreign matter to a minimum.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed, it being also an object to provide a device which is simple in construction, durable and efficient. 7
Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my improved sanitary cap for drinking glasses applied to a glass mounted in a suitable holder; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the form of the device shown in Fig. 1 with a portion of the top thereof broken away; Fig. 3 is a-plan view of a blank from which the lateral section of the cap is formed; Fig. 4 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modified con- I struction; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the lateral section of the device shown in Fig. 4 is constructed; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a still further modified form of the device; Fig. 7 is a plan view of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 1, 1914. Serial No. 842,070.
Patented Oct. 12, 1915.
a blank from which the lateral section of the device shown in Fig. 6 is constructed.
My invention is illustrated in the form of a cap 10 which is applied to a drinking glass or the like 11 so as to cover the mouth thereof and may be used when the glass is supported in a suitable holder such as indicated by the numeral 12. The cap is adapted to fit over the mouth portion of the glass, as shown in Fig. 1, and frictionally engages the same so as to hold the cap from displacement. In its preferred form the cap is made of substantially frusto-conical shape with a closed top and an open bottom and comprises a lateral section 13 and a top portion 14. The lateral section is made from a blank section of paper waterproofed or othersime ilar flexible and waterproof material of suflicient stiffness to withstand considerable strain. As shown in Fig. 3, this blank is in the form of an arcuate strip of uniformwidth throughout its length or substantially so, and with its inner and outer edges 15 and center. The inner edge is severed at spaced points as by. means of V-shapednotches 17 to produce a series of tongues 18 with spaces 19 and 20 at the ends to provide extensions beyond the tongues whereby when the blank is rolled to cause the parts 19 and 20 to over lie each other and pasted-or otherwise secured together in overlapped relation, as
16 located on arcs'concentric to a commontilation of the contents of the glass and exclude the possibility of the use of the device as a liquid holding receptacle.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings the lateral section is indicated by the numeral 22 and is constructed of a blank of'thesame form as that described in connection with the above form of the invention except that in lieu of the tongues 18 the blank is provided with I spaced tongues 23 which may be beveled as shown at 24 and which provide intermediate spaces 25. When this blank is rolled to form the lateral section the tongues are bent inwardly, as shown in Fig. 4:, substantially flush with the top edge of the lat eral section for the attachment of a top portion 26 so as to provide openings 27 between the tongues by reason of the intervening spaces 25 in the blank construction.
In Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings the cap is shown as comprising the lateral section 28, the blank forming the lateral section, in lieu of being provided with the somewhat distantly spaced tongues 23 as in the last described form, having closely adjacent and somewhat elongated tongues 29. The tongues 18 and 23 terminate at a spaced distance from the center of the cap in the aforesaid forms of the invention but in the present form when the blank is rolled to produce the lateral section said tongues extend radially to overlie each other, as shown in Fig. 6, so as to close the top of the cap with the exception of the openings 30 formed as in the other constructions, at the bases of the notches between the tongues when the latter are bent radially inward substantially or at right angles to the lateral section. The tongues in Fig.- 6 are shown slightly rounding where bent, to increase the size of the openings 30 suflicient to permit the proper ventilation and ifdesired if the tongues 29 I are secured together they may be covered by a top portion 31 to provide a more secure attachment as well as to better close the top and thus prevent the entrance of foreign matter. .The top portion in each instance is made from the same or similar material in sheet form, as the lateral section of the cap.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is -1. A sanitary cap for drinking glasses lapped and secured together and the tongues bent inwardly so that the intervening spaces form at the upper edge of the section vent openings leading into the cap, and a closure for the top of the cap.
3. A non-liquid holding cap for drinking glasses and the like, comprising an arcuate flange of substantially uniform width and having its inner and outer edges located on.
concentric circles, said inner edge being cut to provide a plurality of tongues with intervening spaces whereby when the blank is rolled openings will be provided at the bases of said spaces to allow ventilation of the contents of the glass and the ends of the blank will be disposed in overlapped relation, means connecting said ends, said tongues being directed radially inward, and
a circular top over the tongues.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
