FIREPROOF SAFE.

MOSES MOSLER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
FIREPROOF SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,446, dated October 22, 1895.
Application filed August 10, 1894. $eria1 No. 519,997- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mosns MOSLER, of Oincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Safes, of which the following is a specification, ,7
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of fireproof safes, and the improvements will be readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a fireproof safe exemplifying my invention, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the same.
Ordinary features of construction not modified by the presence of my improvements have been omitted from the drawings.
In the drawings, 1 indicates thebody-shell, formed of plate metal and open at the front, the corner joints of this shell being formed either by bending or by angles, or in any of the other usual ways; 2, the door-jamb frame, formed with the usual outward flare and pro vided with steps, the outer margin of this jamhframe fitting against the inner surface of the shell 1 and setting back a short distance from the front edge of the shell; 3, filler-lugs to increase the width of the bearing of the jamb-frame against the inner surface of the shell; 4, a hoop or band surrounding the front of the shell; 5, rivets or screws uniting the jamb-frame to the shell; 6, the door front plate fitting within the front of the shell 1; 7, the door-step frame of a section corresponding with that of the jamb-frame 2, this step-frame fitting against the rear surface of the door front plate, this outer edge fitting inside the shell 1; 8, the door back plate to be secured to the doorstep frame in any usual manner; 9, the inner shell secured to the rear inner edges of jamb-frame 2; 10, rivets or screws uniting the inner shell to the jambframe 2; 11, the hinges connecting the door with the body of the safe, and 12 a hoop or band surrounding the back of the safe.
The filling of the safe will be as usual. The outer shell 1 is strengthened interiorly by the jamb-frame 2 and exteriorly by the band 4. By this construction great strength is secured without the use of the usual front angles, and at the same time a satisfactory facial width is secured for the jamb, permitting a proper arrangement of steps without decreasing the size of the inner shell of the safe. The frames 2 and 7 may be of cast or wrought metal, as desired.
By the use of my invention I am enabled, by dispensing with the usual front angle, to obtain a larger inner shell within the given dimensions of an outer shell than has heretofore been possible or practical in safe construction. Where the front angle-plates have been employed, a relatively smaller inner shell only is possible, owing to the necessity of providing ample door-jamb space and arranging such jamb at the most effective angles.
I claim as my invention- The combination, in a fire-proof safe, of an outer body shell an inner body shell strengthening bands surrounding said outer shell, a flaring stepped jamb-frame connecting said shells, the inner edge of said jamb-frame be ing secured to the inner body shell and the outer edge thereof secured through the lugs thereon to the inner surface of the side walls of the outer shell back fromthe front edge of said outer shell to permit the door to close flush on the outside, whereby the use of a relatively larger inner shell is secured and the construction is simplified and cheapened, substantially as described.
MOSES MOSLER.
