WARDROBE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters i atent No. 547,290, dated October 1, 1895.
Application filed May 2, 1895.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. RODGERS, of Nashua,in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVardrobes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a wardrobe especially adapted to be stored under a bed, in houses deficient in closet-room, and to construct a wardrobe that shall be strong, durable, and convenient.
The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter particularly described, and defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wardrobe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a rear view thereof.
In constructing a wardrobe in accordance with my invention, a box-like body A is provided, of rectangular form and comparatively shallow, about nine inches being a convenient depth, and I affix suitable rollers a to the bottom thereof and provide the front thereof with suitable handles b. A cover B is provided, which rests on the top of the body and is held securely thereon, to be slid back and forth, as follows: On the under side of the cover cleats c are applied and extend from the back edge of the cover, flush with the latter, to a point short of the front edge of the cover, so that the cover can overlap on the front edge of the body. The outer sides at of the cleats c are vertical, to form a proper guiding or steadying contact with the inner surfaces of the sides of the body, while the inner sides 6 of the cleats are beveled, and these cleats fit and slide in corresponding openings f in the back of the body A. On the under side of each cleat a plate 9 is let into the same and secured, as by a screw h, to project laterally beyond the cleat and into a groove 1', that is Serial No. 547,918. mamas formed longitudinally in the inner surface of each side of the body A, as will appear from Fig. 2, such grooves not being extended through the front or back of the body. With this construction the cover may be slid back, as in Fig. 1, without binding, and it will be at all times held securely to the body.
The structure, it will be seen, is strong and durable, and forms a most desirable and convenient depository for wearing-apparel 111 small apartments that are deficient in closetroom.
The cleats a may, if desired, have both sides beveled, providing a true dovetail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A wardrobe, consisting of a box-like structure having its upper edges in the same plane and having longitudinal guides at the inner sides of said edges, said guides terminating at one end in openings formed in one side of the box, a cover, cleats secured to the cover and .70
at the under side thereof and capable of respectively sliding through the openings in the box, and retaining devices secured to the cleats andrespectively engaged with the guides of the box, substantially as described.
2. A wardrobe consisting of a shallow boxlike body adapted to be slid beneath a bed, rollers on the body, and handles on the front of the body, a cover sliding on the top of such shallow box, cleats on the under side of the cover, the cleats having vertical outer sides and beveled inner sides, said cleats fitting and sliding in correspondingly shaped openings in the back of the body, grooves in the sides of the body, which grooves do not ex- ROBERT H. RODGERS. Witnesses:
