The lever is then depressed, so as to engage the pin in another hole. The lever 1 1 is then depressed, when the lug 17 thereon, engaging with lug 12 of the shank of the movable jaw, will force the latter forward against the pipe. The lug 18 will then engage behind the lug 13, clamping the pipe between the jaws and securely holding the movable jaw within the frame and preventing backward movement thereof. It will thus be seen that the frame can be quickly and readily adjusted to the work, and the movable jaw actuated to securely clamp the same between the two jaws.

Be it known that 1, JAMES C. BURGESS, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe-wrenches such as aroused by plumbers, steam-fitters, engineers, and others, for connecting and disconnecting pipes; and its object is to provide a device of this character which can be quickly and easily adjusted to adapt it to pipes of varying sizes.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the lever 14. removed, showing the sliding frame and movable jaw in the act of being moved toward the stationary jaw. Fig. 4: is a cross-section on the line as :10, Fig. 2.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates a stationary jaw, provided on its inner face with a number of. teeth or serra-. tions 2, and formed integral with a handle 3. This handle, intermediate its ends, is formed with a number of holes or recesses 4 for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The numeral 5 designates a slidable frame consisting of a metal plate having its ends bent at right angles, forming side plates 6, which embrace the said handle and extend beyond the inner side thereof.
The numeral 7 designates a transverse bolt or rod secured to the said sides 6.
The numeral 8 designates a movable jaw provided with teeth or serrations 9, and
formed integral with a shank 10 located within said frame and resting on the handle July 23,1895.

3. On its outer side this shank is formed with two curved lugs 12 and 13. Pivoted to the plates 6 is a lever 14 formed with a head 15 and lugs 16, 17, and 18. Also pivoted to said plates by a bolt 19 is a lever 20, which I term an adjusting-lever to distinguish it from lever 14. This lever on its inner side is provided with a pinor stud 21, which engages'i'n the recesses or holes inthe handle 3. At its rear end it is also provided with a short arm 23, which serves as a finger-hold.
The operation is as follows: The adjusting lever is elevated so as to disengage the pin thereof from the hole in the handle, and the sliding frame run up to the pipe or workwith which it is to be used. The lever is then depressed, so as to engage the pin in another hole. The lever 1 1 is then depressed, when the lug 17 thereon, engaging with lug 12 of the shank of the movable jaw, will force the latter forward against the pipe. The lug 18 will then engage behind the lug 13, clamping the pipe between the jaws and securely holding the movable jaw within the frame and preventing backward movement thereof. It will thus be seen that the frame can be quickly and readily adjusted to the work, and the movable jaw actuated to securely clamp the same between the two jaws.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is The combination with the stationary jaw and the handle formed with holes or recesses, of the slidable frame, the movable jaw, the shank formed integral therewith and located in said frame, the lugs formed integral with said shank, the lever pivoted to said frame and formed with lugs adapted to engage with the lugs of the shank and the pivoted adjusting lever having a pin adapted to engage with the holes in the handle; substantially as described.
