llwirnn STATES' PATENT @Prien-.-
JAMES M. VATSON, OF CLEMENTS, ASSIGNOR OF 'l-VO-THIRDS TO S. E. YEO- MAN, O. G. CARNER, AND E. YV. JEFFREY, OF ELMDALF., KANSAS.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,157, dated February 4,1896. Application filed September 28, 1895. Serial No. 564,016. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES M. VATSON, residing at Clements, in the county of Chase and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved W'rench, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved nut and pipe wrench; and it primarily has for its object to provide a wrench of this kind of a simple and inexpensive character which will not cut or mash the pipe and which is adapted to iit a number of different sizes of pipes with one adjustment.
. My invention also has for its object to provide a wrench having the jaws so arranged as to be instantly iitted to a pipe, which have a great leverage power, and which can be worked in very close quarters.
Furthermore, my invention has for its ob-r ject to provide a wrench easily manipulated, comprising few parts, which when assembled will produce a strong and effective wrench, which will not easily become broken or get out of order.
lVith other minor objects in view, which will hereinafter be referred to, the invention consists in such novel features of construction and peculiar combination of parts as will be first described in detail and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my iin-- proved wrench, slrowing the same as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of such wrench. Fig. 3 is a View illustrating the several parts detached. Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on the, line 44 of Fig. 2.
My improved wrench comprises a main lever or handle member A, one end of which has a fixed jaw B, the bearing-face of which is made in the arc of a circle and serrated, as at b, such jaw being of a greater width than the lever A,whereby to provide a large b earing-face, as shown.
C indicates a swinging jaw, the outer end of which curves inward in the arc of a circle parallel to the circle or convex grip-face of the iXed jaw to form a concaved grip-face, which is serrated or toothed, as shown at c.
'The jaw C is a part of a shank member' C',
which is of a width equal that of the fixed jaw B, and has on the upper face a central reinforce-rib C2 to add strength thereto. At the inner end the member C is formed with a pair of pendent ears D D, apertured at d, which embrace the jaw A, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and carry a transverse pin E, upon which is pivoted the dog or pawl F, toothed onits upper face, as at f, to engage the toothed portion of the lever A, the free end of such pawl having a pivotal connection f2 with the lower end of the clip member G held to straddle the lever A, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, such clip G extending above the said lever A and carrying an adjusting-screw H, which passes through the top of the clip and bears against the top of the member A and serves when screwed tight to securely clamp the dog F into a locked engagement with the toothed portion of the lever A, and thereby forni, as it were, a fixed pivot for the jaw C.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that by constructing the jaws and combining them in the manner shown the upper jaw can be quickly swung over a pipe-section. Then by depressing the handle such jaws will instantly grip the pipe without slipping thereon, it being manifest that the greater the pressure on the lever A the more tightly will the pipe be clamped. Furthermore, by forming the jaws with parallel curved toothed portions a single adjustment of the upper jaw will allow for applying the wrench to three or more different sizes of pipes before changing the adjustment.
1t will also be manifest that by forming the lever or fixed jaw and the handle of a single member and providing the upper jaw with ears held to straddle the member A and the toothed head of the lock-pawl a very strong and compact construction is provided, which will not easily get out of order.
Thus should the wrench be applied to the pipe, as shown in Fig. l, andthe handle be depressed in the direction indicated by the arrow the grip action of the jaws would be in the direction indicated, while a reverse movement of the handle will cause the upper jaw to slip loosely over the pipe.
4Having thus described my invention,what
IOO
I claim, and desire to secure buv Letters Pat- 1o toothed dog pivoted in such ears and having an extension7 and a Clip member pivotaliy connected to such extension, held to straddie the bar A and having a set-screw to clamp it to the said bar A all arranged substantially as shown and described..
JAMES M. VATSON. Witnesses:
