NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVED BROOM-HEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,33 dated May 1, 1866.
same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a novel, cheap, and convenient broom-head or device for clasping and holding the broomcorn composing the broom firmly and compactly in place, so constructed that when the broom is worn out it may readily be removed and a new broom substituted therein as often as may be necessary, thus producing a new broom at a trifling expense whenever desired.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of my improved broom; Fig. 2, a top view of my invention, the same being open ready to receive the broom-corn; and Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the same.
The same letters of reference in the different figures denote corresponding parts of my invention.
A represents the broom-head, into which the broom-corn D is placed and secured, as shown. The said broom-head is constructed in two parts, hinged together, as shown at b, of tin or some other suitable sheet metal, each part being out by dies or otherwise in series of an gular incisions, so that by bending the points inward, which are marked min the drawings, they penetrate firmly into the broom-corn arranged therein when the two parts are closed together.
B represents arms attached to the said parts A, as shown, which lie contiguous when the head is closed, forming a round rod upon which a screw is out, which being screwed into the end of the handle C, are thus held firmly together, as desired.
E represents a bar lying loosely across the case A, as shown, provided with a double row of curved hooks marked 0, and attached to a rod, F, which passes out through the case, as shown, and is provided with a nut G, as shown.
The operation of arranging a broom in my improved broom-head is as follows: The handle being removed, the case is laid down and the upper or hinged part thereof raised up, as indicated by the red lines in Fig. 3, and enough of the broom-corn to make half of the thickness of the broom is then inserted at the open end of the case, and properly and compactly arranged and pressed down upon the lower points or teeth, a. The hooked bar E is then arranged upon the broom-corn thus prepared,
the hooks 0, upon the lower side, being inserted among the same, when the remainder of the broom is inserted in the head and pressed down upon the upper hooks, e 0, when the nut G is adjusted upon the rod F, so as to draw the broom firmly and securely within the case, when the top or hinged part is closed down, forcing the points a down into the corn, when the handle is screwed down over said arms B B, as aforesaid, and the whole is completed.
Having described my invention, I will now specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
I claim- The combinatioiv of the bar It, provided with hooks e e, the rod I and broom head A, when arranged so as to tighten the broom-corn independent of the broom-handle, substantially in the manner specified and shown.
SAMUEL B. GUERNSEY.
