BROOM-HEAD.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,316, dated June 5, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osEPHUs LIGE'I, of Posey township, Fayette county, Indiana, have invented ce1-tain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

'Figure l is a view of the socket, and Fig. 2 a View of the lower portion of the handle.

In Fig. l, A represents a bell-shaped socket, Iliade of tin or other suitable material, the upper end terminating in a ring or ferrule, B, which is provided with a thumb-screw,-0.

In Fig. 2, D represents the lower portion of the broom-handle, which is attened on opposite sides, near the end, and is constructed with a mortise, E.

To make a broom the stalks of the broomcorn are inserted in the mortise E to the required quantity, when the handle is passed up through the ring B, bringing the broom-corn tightly into the socket A, when the handle is secured in positon by the thumb-screw O.

Should the broom, from long wear, become loose in the socket the thumb-screw may be loosened and the broom drawn still closer within the socket.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, Iand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The handle D, provided with the mortise E and the set-screw O, in combination with the socket A, all arranged substantially as set forth and described.
