SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,879, dated June 11 1895.
Application filed October 29, 1894. Serial No. 527,173- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. SEFTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,

The present invention has relation to bicycle handles, and it consists in the dilferent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the standard which is constructed in the ordinary manner, reference being had toproperly attt-aching the difierent parts thereto.

as shown, they are provided with serrated ends 6, which serrated ends or faces fit upon corresponding serrated ends or faces 7, formed upon the ends of the section 2, said handles 5 being held at the desired point of adjustment by means of suitable clamping bolts 8 or their equivalents.
It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to provide two distinct adjustments for the handle proper, one of said adjustmentsbeing produced by setting the handle sections 5 at any desired angle to the center section 2, and the other adjustment being produced by releasing the catch bar 9, from the teeth formed in the segment 3, and flanges 4, at which time the center section 2 is free to be oscillated and set at any desired point of adjustment, and securely held by means of the catch bar 9 engaging with the proper toothxin the segment 3, or rather said catch-bar engaging the proper notch between the teeth. For the purpose of securely holding the handle proper at the desired point of adjustment, the spring 10 is provided, and is located snbstantiallyas shown in Fig. 2. Said spring as shown is a helical spring, but it will be understood that a flat spring will answer the same purpose, and may take the place of the helical spring shown.
When it is desired to. provide adjustment only for the handles 5, the center section, 2, may be rigidly attached to the standard 1, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the handle bar section 2, provided with the toothed segment 3, the toothed flanges 4 located upon the standard 1, the catch-bar 9 and the spring 10, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
