DRlP-CUP FOR UMBRELLAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,759, dated June 11, 1895.
Application filed September '7, 1894. Serial No. 522,356. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, EUNICE H. REYNOLDS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Parkland, in the county of Jefferson, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drip-Cups for Umbrellas; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to umbrella stands iu general, and more particularly to that class designed to be carried about the person and to catch and retain the moisture from an umbrella held therein.
vWith this object in view, my invention comprises a box-like base portion, of any suitable material, in the bottom of which is secured a hollow metallic stern provided at its mouth with a ring of rubber or other soft material to receive and retain the ferruled end of an umbrella. Arranged Within this box and surrounding the stem, is a layer of felt or other absorbent material, over which is arranged a suitable cover to hold it in place, said cover having a series of perforations to admit the moisture which drips from the umbrella thereonto.
Referring now to the drawings, Figure lis a plan View ot' my device, showing the main portion ot' the cover removed; and Fig. 2 is alougitudinal section of my device with the elements thereof in their operative position.
In the drawings, my invention comprises a box-like base-portion 5, of any suitable material, having a stem 6 soldered or otherwise secured to the upper surface of its bottom. Arranged withiu the box 5 and surrounding the stem 6, is a filling? of felt, sponge, or other absorbent material, which is held in place by means of a cover formed imtwo parts, a minor portion 8 of a Width equal to that of the stem, fitting closely around one side ot' the stem and extending to the rear portion ot the box. This part may be inserted through a slide opening in the rear of the box 5, or may be placed in position from the top. The major portion 9 of the cover completely covers the remaining portions of the absorbent filling, and may be slid into place, its edges being provided with beads l0 and 1l to take under the overturned edges of the box 5, which form grooves for this purpose. If desired, the minor portion maybe formed a little wider than the stem 6, and may have its excess of width depressed to" extend beneath the inner edges of the major portion.
The entire cover of the box is provided with a series of perforatious extending entirely around the stem 6, and admitting moisture to the interior., `To prevent scratching and other injury to the stickof the umbrella, I prefer to cover the entire stem-6 with a rubber tube, the upper end of which terminates in a ringand projects inwardly over the upper edge ot the stem, forming a bearing for the umbrella stick. Moreover the said covering forms a yieldable opening in the stem whereby umbrellas having different diameters of tip may be snugly held-therein at dierent times.
It is evident that I may depart to agreater 'or less extent from the particular construction set forth herein, and still maintain the principles of luy-invention, it being practicable to make the parts ot a variety ot' materials and to vary the general appearance of the device in acccrdance with the id eas of the manufacturer.
Having now described my invention, I claiml. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow base portion, a stem arranged therein and adapted to receive an umbrella tip, and a removable cover'surrounding said stem and provided with perforations whereby access may be had to the interior of the base.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow base portion, a stem secured therein and adapted to receive and retain au umbrella tip, absorbent material located within the base portion, and a cover provided with perforations to admit moisture to the base portion and the absorbent material therein.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow base portion, a stem` secured therein and adapted to receive and retain an umbrella tip, and a removable cover formed Ain two parts and having perforations admitting moisture to the interior of the base portion.
4. A device ot the class described, compris- IOO ing a hollow base portion, a stem arranged Within the base portion and adapted to receive an umbrella tip, absorbent material arranged within the base portion, and a cover formed in two parts and provided with perforations admitting moisture to the absorbent material within the base.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow base portion, a stem secured therein and provided with a yieldable covering arranged to engage the top of the umbrella, and a lid surrounding said stem and provided with perforations to admit moisture to the interior of the base.
6. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow base portion, a stem arranged therein adapted to receive au umbrella, and a cover formed in two parts and adapted to surround said stem.
7. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow base portion, a stem arranged therein and adapted to receive an umbrella, a cover formed in two parts and adapted to be slid into place to surround the stem, one
portion ot' said cover being adapted to receive and retain the second portion.
8. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow base portion having its upper edges turned inwardly to form grooves, a stem secured Within the base portion and adapted to receive au umbrella, and a removable cover adapted to slide in the grooves in the base portion and surround the stem.
9. A device ofthe class described, comprising a hollow base portion havingr its upper edges turned inwardly to form grooves, astem secured within the base portion and having a yieldable covering extending over its upper edge, and a cover adapted to slide in the grooves in the body portion and surround the stem.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUNICE II. REYNOLDS.
