CUSHIoNsT'AMF.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofkLetters Patent No. 539,355, dated May 1,4, 1895.
Application filed January 25, 1895. Serial No. 536,288. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. COOKE, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Cushion-Stamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing. had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specilication.
This invention has relation to a novel improvement in cushions for hand stamps, the object being to provide a stamp cushion, the type face of which shall possess great elasticity so that said type face will readily accommodate itself to any irregularity of the surface upon which the impression is to be made.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a stamp embodying my invention, while Fig. 2 shows an end view thereof.
My invention essentially comprises an elastic cushion or body provided with two or more tend in a plane parallel to that of the top surface.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a cushion provided with two tiers of cells which, in this instance, are open-ended, cylindrical passages which are arranged equidistant, the tiers, however, being so placed that the upper openings come at a point irn- Inediately between the two adjoining openings of the lower tier. By this arrangement of the openings, the pressure on the stamp sheet is nicely equalized,
In the drawings, the stock or body, A, is provided with the cylindrical openings, 3, which can be extended transversely, longitudinally or radially through this stock, A, the object being that the openings extend in a plane parallel with that within which the die sheet extends. The openings, moreover, could be circular, rectangular or hexagonal, or they could beof any other suitable conformation as long as they are open-ended. If desired more than two tiers of cells could be employed. 'lo this perforated stock or body, A, which is secured to a base, D, by any suitable means, is next secured a die, B, preferably cemented thereto, which die is provided with the raised letters, C.
The body or stock, A, can be made in any suitable size or thickness to meet the various conditions, the series of cells being increased or diminished as the stock, A, is enlarged or decreased.
Now, having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is-
In a hand stamp, the combination with a suitable base, of an elastic cushion, said cushion being provided with two or more series of open-ended passages, said passages being so arranged that the openings of one series are positioned at points between' the openings of the adjoining series, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
` In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN P. COOKE.
