UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLEN D. STARR, OF OHITTENANGO, NEWV YORK.
APPLIANCE FOR SETTl'NG. WRITING-COPIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,553, dated July 13,1886.
Application filed Oct :ber 16, 1885. Serial No. 180,071.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELLEN D. STARR, of Chittenango, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Word and Sentence Building-Frames,of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to particularly instruct pupils in the art of writing; and to that end my invention consists in the combination, with a frame or board having straight and parallel guides and supporting-ribs, of blocks or cards containing script-letters or words or sentences, and formed with straight top and bottom edges parallel with the horizontal line upon which the letters are arranged, and having their side edges oblique and parallel with each other, and with the inclination of the aforesaid letters, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawing, the figure is a face view'of my invention.
A represents a board, which may be composed of wood or card-board, or other suitable material, and constitutes the base or back of my improved frame for building words or sentences, and may also constitute the cover of the case containing the blocks or cards on which the letters are printed. The face side of this board has affixed to it straight and parallel ribs or ridges a a, extending horizontally across said board, and placed proper distances apart to receive between them the blocks or cards I) b, on which the letters, words, or sentences are printed, said ribs or ridges serving as guides for arranging and maintaining the blocks or cards in a straight line, and also serve to brace the board or back of the frame. The blocks or cards 1) contain script-letters dis (No model.)
parallel with the horizontal line upon which U the letters are arranged, so that when these blocks or cards are placed with their bottom edges against the rib or ridge a of the frame A, as shown in the drawing, the importance of the uniform obliquity and parallelism of the script, as well as of the uniform height and straight linear arrangement of the same, becomes still more prominent.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In combination with the frame A, provided with straight parallel horizontal ribs a a, the blocks or cards I) Z), containing script-letters,
words, or sentences, arranged upon a straight line and at a uniform angle of inclination from said line, and the top and bottom edges of said blocks or cards straight and parallel with the horizontal line upon which the letters are arranged, and the side edges of said blocks or cards oblique and parallel with the inclination of the said letters, substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and afiixed my seal in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 5th day of October, 1885.
ELLEN D. STARR. [L. s] Witnesses:
FREDERICK H. GIB S, E. O. CANNON.
