SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,878, dated February 26, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NATHAN HARRIS, of Norwood, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and useful improved pump, which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and more especially designed for conveniently and thoroughly removing sediment and other matter accumulating on the bottom of cisterns, wells, casks, &G.
The invention consists principally of a suction pipe provided at its lower end with a valve casing, having an outwardly and downwardly extending flange at its lower end so as to properly seat the casing in the bottom of the cistern, well or other vessel to be cleaned.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the improvement as applied; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the valve casing and adjacent parts.
The improved pump is provided with a suitable tripod A adapted to be set on top of the well, cistern or other vessel 13 to be cleaned, the said tripod carrying a pump 0 of any approved construction and provided with a suction pipe D made in sections of flexible or rigid material or combination of both. The lower ones for instance may be of flexible material, the middle sections of rigid material, such as sheet metal, cast iron, &c., while the upper section D is made of flexible material such as rubber, &c. The lower end of the suction pipeD is connected by a ball and socket joint E or other suitable connection, with the valve casing F of suitable material and containing the hinged valve G and provided at its lower end with adownwardlyand outwardly extending annular flange F which may be turned up at the edge and which is adapted to be seated on the bottom of the vessel B, so that only that part of the sediment inclosed within the flange F is removed on manipulating the pump 0. When this part of the vessel B has been cleaned of sediment and other matter, then the suction pipe D with its valve casing F is shifted to another unclean place, and in order to conveniently shift the suction pipe, I provide the neck of the valve casing F with aclip H on which is pivoted a handle I preferably made in sections and extending up- 55 wardly alongside the suction pipe D to carry at its upper end a cross bar 1 adapted to be taken hold of by the operator. Now, it will be seen that by this arrangement, the operator taking hold of the outer upper end of the handle I can conveniently shift the valve casing F from one place to another in the bottom of the vessel B, the flexible section D at the upper end of the section pipe permitting movement of the suction pipe and casing in 7 the vessel B. Y
It is understood that after the valve casing and suction pipe-are shifted to a new unclean place and the flange F is seated on the bottom of the vessel, then the pump 0 is set in motion so as to pump up the matter and discharge the same above the ground into other receptacles, sewers and the like.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A pump provided with a suction pipe, a casing containing a valve and provided at its lower end with an unbroken flaring mouth extending outwardly and downwardly from 0 the body of the casing, the upper part of said casing being conical in shape, a neck extending from the cone shaped upper part of the casing, and connected with the suction pipe, and a handle pivotally connected with 5 the valve casing, substantially as shown and described.
2. A pump provided with a suction pipe having a flexible connection with the pump cylinder, a casing connected with the said suction pipe and containing a valve, the said casing being provided at its lower end with a flaring mouth, the upper part of said casing being conical in shape and terminating at the apex in an upwardly extending neck, a ball and socket joint connecting the said suction pipe with the neck of the valve casing, and a handle connected with the valve casing, substantially as shown and described.
3. A pump, comprising a tripod, a pump proper supported on the said tripod, a suction pipe having a flexible connection With the pump cylinder, a casing containing a valve and provided with a neck connected with the said suction pipe the said casing being also provided at its lower end with an unbroken flaring mouth, a clip connected with the said neck and a handle pivotally-connected with the said clip, substantially as shown 'and described.
4. A pump, comprising a tripod, a pump proper supported on the said tripod, a suction pipe having a flexible connection with the pump cylinder, a casing connected with the said suction pipe and containing a valve, the said casing being provided at its lower end with an unbroken flaring mouth, the upper part of said casing being conical in shape and terminating at the apex in an upwardly extending neck a ball and socket joint connecting the said suction pipe with the neck of said valve casing, and a handle pivotallyconnected with the said valve casing, substantially as shown and described.
