IMPROVEMENT IN DRlLL-CHUCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,368, dated March 20, 1866.

To all whom it mm/ concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES S. WELLS and L. H. MAYOTT, ot' Springfield, Ham pden county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Drill-Chuck;

and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section; Fig. 3, an end View, and Fig. 4 an end view with the plate a removed.

The subject of this invention is a chuck by means of which small cylindrical articles may be held firmly and centrally, and which can be easily and quickly operated and adjusted to different sizes.

The construction of this invention is very simple.

It consists of three jaws, A B O, hung on the pivots b c (I and inclosed in a case, D. This case has on the outside a nut, E.

Through the holes 6 f g, opposite the jaws A B O, I pass the screws 6 f g, which are secured to the jaws. These screws fitlooselyln the holes, and when the nut E is turned they operate on the jaws A B G to open or close them. Below this nut E, I place the checknut F, which is screwed up against the nut E, thus preventing it from turningdownward.

The operation of this invention is as follows: It being desired to secure some small cylindrical body like a drill, it is inserted between the jaws of the chuck and the nut E turned so that they all bear on it. The nutFis then turned up againstE, holdingit (the nut E) in place, and thus securing the drill.

It will be seen that in this device I have a "cry simple arrangement, which is quick and easy in operation, sure in its hold on the article inserted in it, and cheaply built.
