Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE sTIMPsoN, Je., OE NEW YoEK, N. Y.-
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF PENS.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,356, dated March 20, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE STIMPSON, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Pens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l represents a plan of this invention Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same. Fig. 8 is a transverse section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line x, Fig. l.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a peu which may be made ot' metal or any other suitable material, and the transverse section of which is corrugated, or which is provided with ears projecting upward, close above or in line with the inner end ot' the slot, in such a manner that the power and elasticity ofthe penis considerable improved, and a pen is obtained which lasts much longer than an ordinary pen of like material, and, furthermore, my pen vwill allow of making much heavier strokes without losing its 4elasticity or sustaining any damage.
A represents a pen made of sheet-steel, gold,
india-rubber, or any other suitable material. This pen is provided with wings a, projecting upward from its edges in line with or close above the inner end ofthe slit b, as shown in Fig. l. By these wings the transverse section of the pen assumes a corrugated shape, as shown in Fig. 3, it being understood that the corners formed between said side wings and the body of the pen may be sharp, as shown in the drawings, or rounded if it should be desirable. Said wings strengthen the pen and increase its power and elasticity, and I am enabled to make much heavier strokes with one ot my pens without overstrainin g the same than with a pen of the ordinary form. The wings prevent the points of the pen from spreading or overlapping, and said points can be made iiner and longer in proportion, when compared with pens of the ordinary shape, without losing the requisite strength and elastieity.
Vhat l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pen of metal or other suitable material, provided with side wings, a, projecting upward, substantially as described, as a new article ot' manufacture.
