Be it known that I, FRANK L. Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town of Ohatham, county of Morris, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in StrapFasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to strap-fasteners of the character illustrated in an application for Letters Patent filed by me on the 5th day of December, 1893, Serial No. 492,824, in which the strap-buckle is attached to a medial point of a tightening lever, which is pivotally attached at one end to one end of the strap, and is adapted, after the free end of the strap is buckled taut thereto, to be swung over upon and fastened to the first mentioned end to draw the strap tight, and before unbuckling to be unfastened and swung reversely to loosen the strap and facilitate the unbucklin g.

The objects of my present invention are to simplify and improve the strap-buckle on the lever, and also the lever-end fastening on the strap.

My invention by which I attain these objects consists, first, in forming the lever integrally with a strap-buckle consisting of two rigid cross-bars, one serving as the pulley of the buckle, and the other carrying a rigid pin or stud to enter the strap-perforations; secondly, in providing as a lever end-fastener an-oblong ring sliding loosely along the strap, and also adapted to receive, as a tuck, the loose end of the strap and to slide over and retain the end of the lever.

In order that my invention may be clearly ascertained, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I carry my invention into practice and then distinctly claim the invention.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like parts are designated by the same letters in all the figures.

Figure l is a plan view of a strap-fastener embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same buckled but not tightened. Fig. 3 is a view, similar to Fig. 2, of the same buckled and tightened. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same buckled and tightened.

I form the side-bars B, strap pivot-bar O,

and end-fastening bar D of the tightening leverA integrally and attach the same pivot ally to the end E of the strap, as in my prior application for patent before mentioned. In lieu of the hinged buckle described in said prior application however, I form the lever A integrally with a buckle formed of a rigid cross-bar F carrying a rigid headed stud G to enter the strap perforations H, and one or more rigid plain crossbars J J, over which the free end E of the strap is pulled taut from below, as shown in Fig. 2, before catching it on the stud G, the plurality of pullbars J J being provided so that the strap can be pulled over either, to vary the amount of take-up when the lever A is swung over. The strap being thus buckled taut, the lever A is swung over to tighten the strap as described in my aforesaid prior application.

To confine the loose end E of the strap and also to fasten the end of the lever A to the strap-end E, I provide, instead of the fixed keeper shown in my said prior application, a metallic keeper or ring K sliding loosely along the strap, a distance which I limit by means of stops L L on the strap, which ring can thus be always adjusted to meet the end of the lever A, however the strap may stretch. Instead also of fastening the lever A down by passing the end E over it and through the ring K, as in my prior application, I now make the ring K large enough to slide over the end D of the lever as well as the end E of the strap, and thus retain them both. I further provide against the ring accidentally slipping off the lever end D, by forming said end with a lateral catch projection L which the slight lateral yielding of the lever A will allow to be disengaged from and cause to engage as a lock the end of the ring K.

The strap-end E will when the lever A is swung over, as shown in Fig. 3, bear upon the head of the buckle stud G, and effectually prevent the strap-end E from becoming disengaged therefrom.
