SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,213, dated August 28, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK HOLT, of South Pittsburg, in the county of Marion and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Plumb-Rule, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to plumb rules such as shown and described in the application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 479,701, filed by me on July 6, 1893, and allowed November 13, 1893.

The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in plumb rules, whereby the rule can be securely held in place, and the slide-carrying ropes can be readily adjusted to enable the masons to properly lay the courses of bricks between two corners of a building.

The invention consists principally of a plumb rule having two blades arranged at right angles to each other, and a slide for each blade and adapted to carry a cord or rope.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as,

will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Fig. 4c is a plan view of the same; and Fig. 5 is a transgerse section of the same on the line 5-5 of The improved plumb rule is provided with the two integral blades A, A, arranged at right angles to each other as illustrated in Fig. 2, the said blades supporting longitudi-' nally-extending clamping rods B and B, respectively, formed with points B adapted to be driven into the wall so as to securely fasten the rule in place. The clamping rods B, B, may be fitted loosely, directly in the blades A and A or in specially-constructed sockets A formed on the blades as indicated in Figs. 3 and 5.

In the blades A and A are formed vertically-disposed guideways in which are fitted to slide the slides O and C, respectively, carrying ropesD and D, respectively, adapted to be stretched between adjacent corners of a building, it being understood that the slides Oand C can be moved independently of each other, so as to raise or lower the ropes or cords D and D respectively, independent of each other on the walls or sides of the building. In the upper ends of the blades A and A are arranged spirit levels E, E, of any approved construction.

The device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is preferably made of wood, while in the construction indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the blades and the other parts are preferably made of metal. If desired the upper end of the blades A and A may be formed with notched pro- I jections F and F respectively, made semicircular and each carrying a plumb cord G carrying a bob Hat its lower end. The lower ends of the plumb cords G are guided on semicircular projections H and H respectively arranged near the lower ends of the blades A and A respectively, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3.

It will be seen that by the devices described, the plumb rule can be readily fastened in place on the corner of a wall and the cordsD and D can be independently adjusted on opposite sides of the wall.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A plumb rule, comprising two blades arranged at right angles to each other, and a slide fitted to slide on each blade and adapted to carry a rope or cord, substantially as shown and described.

2. A plumb rule, comprising two blades arranged at right angles to each other, a slide on each blade and adapted to carry a rope or cord, and clamping rods held on the said blades and adapted to engage a wall to fasten the rule in place, substantially as described.

3. A plumb rule, comprising two blades, a slide on each blade and adapted to carry a rope or cord, clamping rods detachably secured to the blades, and a plumb cord and bobs at their ends, substantially as debob supported from each blade, substantially scribed.
