UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. STEPHEN, OF ST. J OHNSBURY, VERMONT.
GARMENT- 8U PPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,872, dated August 21, 1894.
pp ati n filed September 25, 1898. Serial No. 486,451. (No model-7" To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1. WILLIAM A. STEPHEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. J ohnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to garment supporters, and has forits object to provide simple and efiective means for supporting garments without injury to the same and to facilitate a ready and quick attachment or detachment.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved attachment, shown applied in operative position. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the improved device showing an adjustment in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section showing one of the toothed sliding plates partially removed.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures;
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a substantially U-shaped frame, having a dove-tailed slot or recess 2 in one of the arms thereof, in which is slidingly and removably fitted a dove-tailed toothed block 3, having the teeth thereof extending inwardly and opposite to the said toothed block is positioned an inwardly adjustable toothed block/l, attached to an adj ustingscrew 5,which may be moved inwardly toward the block 3 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to thereby attain a secure attachment in accordance with various thicknesses of material which is placed between the said toothed blocks. The upper reduced end of the U-shaped frame has a snap hook 6 applied thereto by means of a screw shank 7 or other suitable form of attachment, and the said snap hook, may be of any useful and well known design or be replaced by an analogous attaching construction.
The entire device will be made of suitable material and ornamented in any well-known manner.
When in use, the device can be substituted for buttons in holding trousers by means of suspenders or braces or for conveniently supporting undergarments and the snap hook may be removably attached to suspenders or braces, and when not in use, is adapted to be carried in the pocket of the wearer. It will thus be seen that the device will replace buttons which are continuously breaking loose and causing considerable inconvenience.
The simplicity of the device renders the same exceptionally cheap and it is obviously apparent that it can be made in any size to suit a desired purpose as well as changed in the minor details without in the least departin g from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a garment supporter, the combination of a U-shaped frame having an attaching device with a snap hook at the upper end thereof, and rigidly secured thereto, the lower portion of said frame being open and at one side thereof provided with a dove tail slot or recess and the opposite side with a straight slot or recess, a toothed block of dove tail form mounted in the said dove tail recess and adapted to slide thereinto longitudinally, and an opposite toothed block mounted in the straight recess and adapted to move inward therefrom toward the opposite dove tail block and a screw passing one side of the frame engaging the said inwardly movable block for adjusting the same, the said teeth extending over the entire inner surfaces thereof, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. STEPHEN.
