, J. v. COLEMAN. ADJUSTABLE PARTITION FOR PAGKING BOXES, &c.
Patented Aug 7, 1894.
\NHMIIHIHlllllwlIll!IlltlIllIllliiiWIIllIlllllllllllllllflllllllllllll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES V. COLEMAN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.-
' ADJUSTABLE PARTITION FOR PACKING-B-OX ES,-&LO.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 524,163, dated August'7,1 894.
Application filed August 1 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES V. COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of SanFrancisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Partition for Packing Boxes, Travelers Trunks, 8.70., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a novel construction of movable partitions adapted for packing-boxes, trunks, portmanteaus and boxes for sporting goods such as fishing and hunting tackle, and the object of my invention is to provide a means for separating and compressing the articles into a small compass and keep them in place, whereby great economy in space is had and the contents of the box easily reached at all times.
To this end my invention consists in providing such receptacles with inwardly formed grooves along which lugs connected to the partition-plates move; the latter being provided with centrally arranged rods or thumbscrews the lower ends of which engage with a base-plate and hold the partition-plates firmly in place, all of which together with the details of construction and operation will be hereinafter. fully set forth and described.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification and to which reference is had by letters:--Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention with movable partitions in place and one end removed. Fig. 2 is avertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 isa perspective View of one of the sections.
The partitions A A may be composed of metal or other suitable material and are provided with split lugs B B B B riveted to edges at each end of the plate, the faces of the upper lugsB B being made flush with the top edge of the partition so that it will move without friction in the groove assigned for it to be hereinafter described.
Each partition is provided with fixed central sockets D D in which is set a screw rod E having a head E on the upper end for turning the rod. The lower end portion is screw-threaded and fits a threaded socket in the lower block D The end of this screw portion rests on a bearing plate or strip F fixed along the bottom of the box, case or receptacle, so that when the rod is screwed "down the upward pressure exerted by the screw upon the partition causes the lugsB B Serial No. 482.108. (No model.)
to bind in the grooves C C and hold the partition firmly in place. The bearing strip F is fixed to the bottom of the box or receptacle as shown in Fig. l to take the pressure of the screw and prevent it from cutting into the bottom of the box.
The height of the partitions may be such as of the sub-divisions be compressed and made compact by exerting pressure upon the plate of such compartment and turning down the binding-rod or thumb-screw. It will also be seen that the contents of one division can beremoved without disturbing any other compartment of the series.
When a removable tray is provided in a out, is---- The combination with a box or similar receptacle having grooves in the inner walls or faces of its'opposite Vertical sides, of a movable. vertical partition provided on its opposite ends with lugs or projections adapted to fit and slide in said grooves and a clamping or locking device on the partition consisting of a vertical rod rotatable in guides on'one face of the partition, its foot or end at" the bottom of the partition adapted to bear against the bottom of the box, a head on the top-end accessible from the top of the parti- 9 tion and a screw-threaded portion on the body'of the rod fitted to a' corresponding threaded socketin one of the guides; whereby the partition is locked in position by the downward thrust of the rod against the said bottom when the rod is rotated and the said locking means is operative from the upper part of the box.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
JAS. V. COLEMAN. [L. s] Witnesses: i
C. W. M. SMITH, EDWARD E. OSBORN.
