PORTABLE lFoLlJlNc; BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters' 'Patent No. 522,569, dated July 3, 1894.
Application nea Novemterls, 189s. sesamo. 491.372- (No modell) To al? whom it may concern/.- f
i Be 1t known that I, SAMUEL C. WHERRY, a cltizen of the UnitedStates of America, residying at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Folding Bed, of which the following is a specification.
lMy object is to provide a simple, stron g, and durable bed adapted to be readily folded compactly and transformed into a bench or lounge and accomplish the results contemplated by the invention hereinafter set forth, pointed out 1n my claims and illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in whichi Figure 1 is a top View and Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectionalview showing the constructlon and relative position of lthe operative parts. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of an adjustable leg and bracev combined with a jointed side of the bed and`also xed at its other end to a roller mounted in the head portion of the bed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the b ed folded or transformed into a bench. Fig. 5 is a sectional View of a jointed side having an adjustable sliding braceand leg` combined therewith.'
A represents the head end of the bed composed of two mating short side pieces A2 that are rigidly connected by a cross piece A3.
B represents the foot end of the bed conl-` posed of short mating side pieces B2 that are rigidly connected by a cross piece and footv board B3, and provided with legs to adapt the complete foot end B to be united with the head end A to produce a bench or lounge.
C, C are corner posts fixed to the ends of the short side pieces A2, and C2 is a head board fixed to the posts C.
D, D, are brackets flxed to the posts C and the side pieces A2 to aid in supporting the head end portion of the bed. Y
F, F, are posts or legs fixed to the side pieces B2 to support the foot end ofthe bed. They are provided with casters to facilitate .the movements of the complete foot'end B relative to the head end A. j
F2 is-a cross piece fixed to the side pieces B2 to supportl a fiexible bed bottom 'H fixed thereto.
J is a roller in bearings formed in or fixed to the side pieces A2, and J2 is a roller immediately below the roller J in bearings formed in or fixed to the same side pieces A2.
J 3 is an angular end of the journal of the roller J2 adapted to have a wrench applied thereto for operating the roller as required to regulate the tension ofthe flexible bed bot# rtorn H that is extended over the roller J andY are connected, by means of jointed sides Ll that are hinged at their ends to the short side pieces A2v and B2 in such a manner that they will bend inward at their centers and fold into parallel position with each other and the foot board B2 and the head board A3 when the 'l and B2, as shown in Fig. l, in such a manner y that their jointed centers will be in different vertical planes as required to allow them to be folded into parallel position with each .Other and the foot and head boards at the saine time united to produce a bench or lounge, Each jointed side L has a longitudinal groove or bearing m in its inside and central portion into which is fitted a straight sliding brace fn, in such a manner that when the brace is in the center itwill stiften the joint and prevent the side L from bending. To each brace m is pivoted a foot r, in such a manner that when the brace is in proper position for stiffening the jointed side L the foot sional strain upon the hinges when the jointed sides are subjected to the weight of a person seated thereon.
S is a iiat seat hinged to the bottom of the head board C in suoli a manner that it can be turned upward against the head board, when not in use, to cover the rollers and to serve as a seat; or it may be detachably connected so it can be removed when the head portion A and the foot portion B are separated; or it may be hinged to the foot board B3.
Canvas, woven wire, or any suitable material that can be rolled upon the roller J 2, can be used for making the flexible bottom H.
It is obvious a bed of any size desired can be thus constructed and the back of the head board and the seat upholstered or finished in any style desired.
To regulate the tension of the flexible bed bottom and stretch it to support a person thereon when the sides L are unfolded and i stiiened by means of the sliding braces m, I attach a wrench to the angular end J 3 ot' the roller J 2 and turn the roller as far as necessary and then allow the pawl K2 to engage the ratchet K as required to lock the roller.
To fold the bed I slide the bracesmod the joints in sides L and then bend the sides inward and wind the flexible bottom H upon the roller J 2 by drawing it over the roller J. This action draws the foot end portion B toward the head end portion A and folds the sides L into parallel position with cach other and compactly within the space that is covered by means of the seat S, as required to produce a bench or lounge when the bed is folded.
I claim as my invention- 1. Inafolding bed, a jointed side piece having a bearing on its inside and a bar or brace sliding therein, and a foot carried by the said sliding brace, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forthfor the purposes stated.
2. The combination of the sliding brace n carrying a foot r pivoted to said brace, with the side piece L having a joint at its central portion and a bearing m to support the sliding brace in the manner set forth, for the pu rposes stated.
3. A transformable bed comprising a head end portion composed of two short side pieces A2, two posts C and a head board C2 rigidly connected, a foot end portion composed ot' two short side pieces, B2, a foot board B3 and two feet F, two jointed sides L hinged tothe short side pieces A2 and B2 and provided with bearings m,sliding braces n, carrying pivoted feet r, a roller journaled to the side pieces A2, a ratchet K on the end of the roller, a pawl K2 to engage said ratchet, a fiexible bed bottom H fixed to the roller and to -a cross piece at the foot end portion of the bed, and a seat S, all arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes stated.
