.P. H. LYNCH.
PICTURE HANGER.
Ufikfhesses vertical section.
'UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
PATRICK' H. LYNCH, OFBRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
PICTURE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,291, dated June 12, 1894.
Application filed October 6, 1893- Serial No. 487,395. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, PATRICK H. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in picture hangers, and the objects of my improvement are to produce a neat and substantial picture hanger which may be readily adj usted vertically, and the cross bar of which may be adjusted laterally for being secured to pictures of different widths.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my picture hanger. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with a picture attached and with the knob portion in Fig. 3 is a plan view of the adjustablecross bar. Fig. 4 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the upper portion of my hanger as applied to a picture hook designed to take over a molding, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same, together with a transverse section of the molding.
7 designates what may be termed the knob portion of my picture hanger, the same being provided With a threaded shank 8 or other proper provision for securing it upon a wall and also provided with a support 9 over which the hook 10 of the hanger strap 11 may be hung. This hanger strap is provided with a forwardly projecting lug 12 at its lower end, the same being perforated for the passage of the hanger rod 13. The strap 11 is also provided with a series of perforations 14 which may extend up and down as far as desired, and the positions of which holes are'indicated by broken lines in Fig. 2. The body of this rod passes through the perforated lug 12, and the rearward projecting point 15 at its upper end may be passed through any of the perforations in the series 1 L as desired. To the back of a the picture frame A, I secure by means of screws the cross bar which is composed of two like members 16, their outer ends being perforated for attachment to the picture A, while their inner ends are flatted and connected to lap by each other as they are passed through the socket piece 17 as shown. This socket piece is provided with a set screw 19 for fastening the lapped ends of the cross bar 16 after the same has been adjusted to the desired width of picture. 5 5 The socket piece should be fastened in place centrally between the two ends of the complete cross bar. The lower end of the hanger rod 13 is screw-threaded, and after passing it through a hole in the socket piece 17, itis sup- 6o plied with a nut 18 as shown for holding the cross bar and picture in their proper position. Instead of the knob portion 7, when picture moldings are used, the hook 10 may be curved to fit the picture molding B, or an ordinary picture book 0 may be employed and the hook 10 passed through a perforation in the lower end of the picture hook.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a picture hanger, the hanger strap 11 having a hook at its upper end, a series of perforations in its body and a perforated lug at its lower end, and the hanger rod 13 having its body passing through the perforated lug of said hanger strap, and having at its upper end a projecting point 15 for engaging any of the perforations in the body of said hanger strap, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. A picture hanger consisting of a vertical hanger rod on a suitable support, the socket PATRICK H. LYNCH.
