FENCE-WlRE-TIGHTENING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,940, dated May 15, 1894;.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY BUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Morris, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Wire-Tightening Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in that class of devices for tightening the wires of wire fences or compensating for the contraction and expansion of such wires by providing a spring or series of springs in connection with the corner posts, and the novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation or face view of a section of fence with myimprovements applied. Fig. 2, is an enlarged, perspective, detail view with a part of the spring bar broken away.

Referring by letter to said drawings: A, indicates one of the corner posts and B, another corner post of a fence, which may be of any ordinary or approved construction, having any number of wires a. The post A, is provided with the usual ratchets b, and pawls c, for receiving and adjustably holding one end of each wire of the fence. On the outer side of the post B, and at top and'bottom respectively, I provide a stop d, and be-' tween these stops I provide a suitable number of flat curved springs. These flat springs e, which are of convoluted form in longitudinal section, are secured at their bowed or curved centers f, by means of a screw g, or the like, to the outer side of the post B. Placed against these springs is a verticallydisposed bar 0, which is limited in its inward movement against said springs by the stops d, so that serious injury to said springs may be prevented when the wires are drawn too tight. The wires a, which as before described are secured attone end to the adjusting ratchets, are provided at their opposite ends with loops h, which are formed by looping the wire and wrapping the end, as shown at c. These loops are placed over the post 13, and around the spring-pressed bar 0, so that said wires will be held yieldingly and will be prevented from injury by the natural contraction and expansion due to the changes of temperature and will furthermore aid in preventing the wires from sagging; serving as tension devices for said wires. By the employment of the fiat springs and the bar 0, the fence wires are held uniformly and the objectionable necessity of boring holes through the post is obviated, and by the employment of the stops d, the fence, as first constructed may have the Wires drawn very tightly without impairing the usefulness of the spring in any manner whatever, and said springs are held in readiness to act upon the slightest slacking of the wires.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a fence of the character described, the combination with the corner posts; of the wires having the loops at one end, the stops cl, secured to the outer side of one post, the flat and curved springs secured at their middle portions to said outer side of the post between the stops, and the vertically-disposed bar 0, the said post, springs, and bars being received in the loops of the wires, substantially as specified.

2. In a fence, substantially as described, the combination with the posts, of the wires having loops at one end, fiat springs secured to the outer side of one post, and the bar placed against said springs, said post,vsprings and bar being embraced by the loops of the wires, substantially as specified.
