UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED FENCE-POST AND WIRE-FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
Application filed July 17, 1905. Serial N0. 2'70 133.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. ENGESETTER, a subject of the King of England, residing at Birch Hills, in the district of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Fence-Post and VVire-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for fastening wires to fence-posts, and comprises a simple and efficient means consisting of pivotal clampingmembers, which are mounted upon pins adjacent to notches or recesses in the edge of the post which receive line-wires and provided with arms which are adapted to engage over the corners of the post, thus serving to hold the pivotal members in closed relation and also to retain the line-wires in their proper positions in the recesses formed in the post.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and'in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of a post, showing line-wires fastened thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the post, and Fig 3 is an enlarged detail perspective of one of the wireholding devices.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letters, A designates a post that may be made of any material and is provided with a series of notches or recesses B, formed in one face thereof, and O G designate pivotal wire-holding members, each of which is bent to form ears 0, which are perforated and pivotally mounted upon the pins D, which project from the opposite faces of the post. The lower end of each member 0 has oppositely-disposed arms E, each of which is adapted to be-bent in the manner shown in the sectional view of the drawings, with its ends angled and engaging the face of the post opposite that in which the recesses are formed for the purpose of holding the outer face of each member flush with the face of-the post, and the lower end of each member in contact with the marginal edge of a recess, while the under edge of each arm is adapted to bear against a line-wire to hold the same within a recess. Said arms may be made either of resilient metal and adapted to normally spring over the corners of the post or they may be made ductile and be bent about the post, the object of the arms being to securely hold the members in locking relation with reference to the wire.
By the provision of the apparatus shown and described it will be observed that a simple and eflicient means is provided for holdingline-wires to a post and so arranged that the same may be easily detached, if desired.
While I have shown a particular form of fastening device illustrating my invention, it will be understood that I may vary the construction of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a post, having a se ries of recesses formed in one face thereof, locking members pivotally mounted upon the post, oppositely-extending arms projecting from the lower free end of each of said members, the ends of said arms being angled and adapted to engage about the corners of the post, as set forth.
2. In combination with a post, having a series of recesses formed in one face thereof, locking members pivotally mounted upon the post, oppositely-extending arms projecting from the lower free end of each of said members, the ends of said arms being angled and adapted to engage about the corners of the post, and the lower ends of said members adapted to contact with the marginal edges of said recesses, as set forth.
8. In combination with a post, having recesses formed ,in. one face thereof, locking members having ears which are perforated, pins carried by the post and upon which said members are mounted, arms projecting from the lower free ends of said members and designed to engage about the post and retain wires in said recesses, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT E. ENGESETTER.
