UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT B. DICK, CFO CHICAGO, ILLINoIs, ASSIGNOR To THE A. B. DICK COM- PANY, OF sAME PLACE.
COMBINED DESK AND TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 518,778, dated April 24, 1894.
Application filed December 19, 1892. Serial No. 465,585. (No model.) A
.To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. DICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Chicago,-
in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have Invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Desk and Type- Writei- Cabinet, of which the following is a the necessity of raising or lowering the machine as heretofore, particularly in those cabinets where the machine was supported upon a hinged base. These objects I accomplish by combining a desk of ordinary construction with a cabinet formed integral with the desk portion, whichcabinet may be provided with aseries of drawers anda compartment for a typewritiug machine, this latter compartment being so located and arranged as to permit the typewriting machine to be readily brought into position for writing.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combined desk and typewriting cabinet as the same appears when the typewriting machine is not in use. Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view with the typewrit-ing machine in position for use.
a is an ordinary flat-top writing-desk which is provided with a series of drawers b.
c is the typewriter cabinet, which, as shown, is integral with the desk a and serves as the support for one end thereof. This cabinet is provided with a compartment 07. which is shown as of an L-shape, and which is closed by a swinging door c. This compartment is adapted to receive a typewriting machine, and its shape will vary as the shape of the machine varies. I prefer, however, to make this compartment L-shaped so that it will accommodate such machines as the Remington, Caligraph, &c. As shown, the bottom f of the compartment is located in a plane several inches lower than the plane of the top of the desk a, while the top is on a higher plane. A table 9 carrying the typewriting machine It slides on top of the" bottom f of the compartment d, guide strips 'ibeing provided as shown. The outer end of the table 9 is provided with legs j having rollers at their feet as shown. These legs are separated as shown, so that when the table is pushed into its compartment they will not interfere with the opening of the drawers k.
It will be obvious from the foregoing description that the top of the desk 0. is useful for all ordinary desk purposes without any interference from the cabinet portion of the device, while the top of the cabinet portion is also useful for certain desk purposes such as holding account-books, &c., and that the .typewriting machine may, by simply swinging open the door 6 and pulling out the table g, be brought into writing position at the proper height without laborious efiort, and that the operator, by simply moving his chair or swinging around on it, will be in position to operate the typewriter, and that when the machine is out of use, by sliding the table into its compartment and closing the door 6, it will be protected from dust, &c.
I claim- 1. A combined desk and writing machine cabinet having a desk portion and a writing machine compartment at or near one end of said cabinet provided with a platform for supporting a writing machine, said machine I being movable into and out of said compartment in the same plane, substantially as described.
2. A combined desk and writing machine cabinet having a desk portion and an L- shaped writing machine compartment provided with a platform for supporting a writing machine, said machine being movable into and out of said compartmentin the same plane, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 9th day of December, 1892.
- ALBERT B. DICK.
