, TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
Application filed April 12, 1918. Serial No. 228,153.
To all u'hom z'tmay concern Be it known that I, KENNETH M. BYROX, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Clemens, in the county of Macomb and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in typewriter cabinets, and has for its object to provide a cabinet of the character specified, wherein the desk, when closed, will be of the proper height for use as an ordlnary desk and which, when open, will present the typewriter in proper position for use.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cabi net closed;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cabinet open;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the desk open;
Figs. 4 and 5 are sections on the lines 4-4 and 55, respectively, of Fig. 3.
In the presentv embodiment of the invention, the cabinet comprises a body 1 having the usual legs 2 and provided with drawers and with a filing case 4, the drawers being at one end of the cabinet while the .filing case is at the opposite end.
The typewriter, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, is connected to a slide 5 which moves in guides 6 on the top 7 of the body of the cabinet. These slides 7 are on an extension from a hinged flap 8, which forms part of the front of the cabinet when closed, and which forms part of the top when open.
The cover for the cabinet consists of a portion 9 and a portion 10, the portion 9 being fixed while the portion 10 is mounted to swing with respect to the portion 9. The portion 9 is secured to extension ends 11, which in turn are secured to the ends of the body of the cabinet, and the said ends 11 assist in forming the ends of the cover portion of the cabinet when closed. The ends are completed by flaps 12 which are secured to the portion 10 of the cover, and it will be noticed that the remote ends of the portions 11 and 12 of the ends are beveled downwardly and inwardly.
The rear of the cover portion of the cabinet is closed by a flap 13 which is hinged to the portions 11 of the ends, and the said flap 13 is connected to the portions 12 at its ends by links 14 in such manner that when the portion 10 of the cover is closed the flap 13 will be swung up into position between the ends of the end portionsll.
A slotted link 15 connects the tiltin, flap 8 with the portion 10 of the cover. in such manner that when the portion 10 is swung upwardly and forwardly into the position of Fig. 1, the flap 8 will be tilted into inclined position against the beveled ends of the portions 12 of the cover ends. The portion 10 of the cover carries file racks 16 and 17 near its ends along its inner face, and the top of the body has recesses for receiving these racks when the cover is closed. A copy holder or rack 18 is also supported by the portion 10 of the cover in such position that it will be above and behind the typewriter when the desk is open.
In use, when it is desired to open the cabinet, the portion 10 of the cover is lifted and swung upwardly and baokwardly into the position of Fig. 2. The rear end of the said portion moves downwardly between the end portions 11 of the ends and between the flap 13 and the body of the cabinet, and the downward movement of the portion 10 is checked by the engagement of the end portions 12 with the body of the cabinet. The swinging backward of the portion 10 of the cover swings the flap 8 into horizontal position, and the typewriter carrier slide may be adjusted to the desired position on the flap 8.
It will be noticed that the ends of the portion 10 of the cover are cut away at the end portions 11, in order that it may move between the said end portions, while at the front of the cover portion the ends of said cover portion 10 are flush with the outermost portions of the end portions 11. The flap 13 closes the rear of the cover portion of the cabinet, while the flap 8'closes the front. The ends of the cover are completed by the portions 11 and 12 and the top by the portions 9 and 10. The improved cabinet, when closed, is approximately thirty-one inches in height, forming a' very convenient desk for usual purposes, as it has a flat top.
It. will be noted from an inspection of Figs. 3, 4 and 5 that the file cases 16 and 17 are hinged at 19 so that a lifting swinging movement is imparted to the top. 10 when the front edge is lifted. As the top moves downwardly and rearwardly, the element 13 swings downward to permit the rear end of the top to pass down between the flap l3 and the bottom of the table. The front 8 is hinged at 20 to the body of the desk.
I claim:
1. A cabinet of the character specified, comprising a double pedestal body, a tilting flap having a portion extending between the pedestals and forming the top of the cabinet body between the pedestals, fixed end portions secured to the ends of the body, a cover portion secured to the rear ends of said fixed end portions, a tilting cover section mounted to swing between the said fixed end portions and carrying end portions for completing the ends. the said end portions at each end having their remote ends beveled inwardly and downwardly, the tilting flap closing against the beveled front ends, and a iiap hinged between the rear ends of the fixed end portions for closing between the beveled rear ends of the end portions, a connection between the said flap and the movable portion of the cover, and a connection between the movable portion of the cover and the tilting flap at the front, said tilting flap having guides and a typewriter supporting slide movable in the guides.
A cabinet of the character specified, comprising a double pedestal body, a tilting flap having a portion extending between the pedestals and forming the top of the cabinet body between the pedestals. fixed end portions secured to the ends of the body, a coverportion secured to the rear ends of the said fixed end portions, a tilting cover section mounted to swing between the said fixed end portions and carrying end portions for completing the ends, the said end portions at each end having their remote ends beveled inwardly and downwardly, the tilting flap closing against the beveled front ends, and a thug hinged between the rear ends of the fixed end portions for closing between the beveled rear ends of the end portions, :1 connection between the said flap and the movable portion of the cover, and a connection between the movable portion of the cover and the tilting flap at the front.
3. A cabinet of the character specified, comprising a double pedestal body, a tilting flap having a portion extending between the pedestals and forming the top of the cabinet body between the pedestals, fixed end portions secured to the ends of the body, a cover portion secured to the rear ends of the said fixed end portions, a tilting cover section mounted to swing between the said fixed end portions and carrying end portions at each end having their remote ends beveled inwardly and downwardly, the tilting flap closing gainst the beveled front ends, and a flap hinged between the rear ends of the fixed end portions for closing between the beveled rear ends of the end portions.
