Description
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS HOOD, OF SENECA FALLS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE PACKINGS FOR PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,831, dated January 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS Hoon, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pump-Pistons, the object of which is to avoid the necessity of frequent removal of packing therein.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the pump-plunger with a gage, Figure 1, for the purpose of pressing the leather or other packing attached to the plunger so as to fill the cylinder by lowering the gage, as oocasion may require, to keep up a perfect packing and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being 11 ad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Fig. 1 represents a gage detached from the plunger, and Fig. 2 thegage and plunger combined in condition for use. Letter A represents the base of the plunger; B, the packing; G, the flange of the gage, (which in Fig. 2 is pressed down into the packing.) D is a set-screw fastening the gage to the rod, and E the arms of the gage.
By means of this gage the packing can be made to last at least from one-third to onehalf longer than is done by the methods now in use, making a saving of from twenty-five to fifty per cent. by the use of this gage. In the ordinary method of constructing plungers when the packing is worn to two-thirds or onehalf its original thickness it will adhere to the plunger and lose its pressure on the cylinder, whereas in the use of this gage the packing can be pressed by lowering the gage, as seen in Fig. 2, and kept perfect in its operation until entirely Worn out.
'What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The adjustable gage E O, substantially as constructed and applied.
2. A set-screw or equivalent detainer in coinbination therewith.
CORNELIUS HOOD.
