Description

B. THOENS.
HYDRAULIC PRESSURE REGULATOR AND RAM.

WITNESSES FlELl.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE,
BUROHARD THOENS, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN S. MCDONALD, OF SAME PLACE.
HYDRAULIC-PRESSURE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,730, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed May 12, 1885. Serial No. 165,238. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BUROHARD THOENS, subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic-Pressure Regulators and Rams, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improve ments wherein the stroke of the pistons or rams of hydraulic-pressure regulators or cylinders are automatically limited, and thus 1 prevented from bursting or otherwise injuring their cylinders or damaging the work to which they are applied.
My improvements will be more readily un derstood by referring to the accompanying drawings, whereon Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the upper part of an accumu lator. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of the lower end of the piston or ram thereof, and Fig. 3 is a top View of the stuffing-box em- 2 ployed for tightening or keeping the packing in position around the ram.
On the drawings'only' such parts of the apparatus as related directly to my improvements are lettered, it not being deemed nec- 0 essary to refer to the remaining parts thereof, as they form no essential part of the same.
The part lettered A will serve to illustrate the head of an accumulator or ram-cylinder. In this instance it is shown with a pipe, B,
screwed into the lower end thereof, and with an intermediate packing-ring, c, for preventing any leak around the same; but instead of connecting a pipe with the aforesaid part of the apparatus, as shown, the said part may be 0 made to constitute the open end of a cylinder, the opposite end of which should be provided with an aperture or pipe for the introduction of the liquid whereby the ram or piston is to be operated.
The mouth or outer surface of the head A is provided with a stuffing-box, D, which is either screwed into the said head or adj ustably held therein by means of ordinary clamping-bolts. The piston or ram E, or rather that part of the same which is adapted to operate in the cylinder, is made of a uniform diameter and provided with a groove, f, which is cut in one side thereof from the inner end to such distance as it is designed the outward movement of the same shall be limited. The edges of the groove are rounded or smoothed off in order that the packing which is employed beneath the stuffing-box may notbe cut or otherwise injured thereby.
Any suitable packing may be used, and if desired, a metal ring may be employed be tween the packing and stuffing-box, as shown at h, to prevent injury to the former by the screwing on or off of the latter.
As shown in the drawings, suitable grooves are cut in the stuffing-box and in the ring, if one should be used beneath same, to permit of a free discharge of liquid as soon as the upper end of the groove shall have reached same, and thus arrest further outward movement of the piston or ram.
I am aware that hydraulic rams have been made with an orifice extending through the end and out one side thereof, in order that when the latter part is brought into communication with a similar orifice in the side of the cylinder the liquid shall flow through the same and thus prevent further movement of the ram. An objection to this arrangement is the extreme nicety required in adjusting the parts, as well as the liability of disarrangement consequent to the wear and tear of same, or of the parts connected therewith.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a piston or ram having a groove formed in the lower part thereof, as described, with an accumulator or hydraulic cylinder provided with a grooved stuffing-box and packing, within which the said piston or ram is adapted to operate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BUROHARD THOENS.
