GYMNASTIC APPLIANCE FOR SCHOOL-DESKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,788, dated April 3, 1894.

Be it known that I, THEODORE BESSING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Gymnastic Appliance for School- Desks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to inventions in school room gymnastic apparatus for which I have made applications for Letters Patent viz., Serial No. 442,642, filed August 10, 1892, and Serial No. 431,518, filed May 2, 1892, and which inventions consist essentially in applying parallel bars to school desks for use in school rooms. r o

My present invention comprises an attachment for school desks whereby the school desk is made a receptacle for parallel, hand or breast bars, dumb bell, Indian club and wand or bar bell, the same attachment or appliance being so arranged as to allow the parallel bar to be adjusted in position for. use'or out of the way as may be desired.

My invention also comprises the combination of parts whereby the bar is adjustably attached to the desk. I

My invention is adapted to be embodied, as shown, in the attachment made separate from the desk, and is also adapted to be cast integral with the frame of the desk. No view of the device applied integral with the frame of the desk is shown for the reason that no invention is required to make such adaptation in view of the illustrations which appear in the drawings. I

Figure 1 is an end view of a desk provided with my improved appliance showing the hand or parallel bar elevated in position for use and showing the dumb-bell, Indian club and wand in place in their brackets or racks. Fig. 2 is a fragmental front elevation of desks provided with my invention. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the handor parallel bar elevated in position for use. Fig. '4: is a perspective view showing the attaching bracket rack and the bar and its arm removed from such rack. Fig. 5 is a plan view show ing the bar bracket and combination rack in place upon the framework of the desk, the bar being shown in its elevated position.

The base member is provided with a series of hooks or clasps of cast or spring metal b b 1)" arranged in pairs to receive and retain the dumb-bells, Indian club and wand which are shown in position in Fig. l but which are not marked with reference letters. These hooks are shown secured to the attachment bar and they are thus adapted to be applied to school desks already manufactured or may be applied directly to the frame of the. desk at the time the same is manufactured. They may be applied as in dicated in the drawings either by fastening them on by screws or rivets as is the case, with the hook I), or they may be cast in the body of the attachment bar (or desk frame) as in dicated with the hooks or clasps b, and b".

The double bracket 0 is secured to the bracket bar, and extends from the base member a up along the upright member a, to which it is secured. This double bracket is provided at its base with a shoulder rest 0 arranged to receive and sustain the lower end of the arm'd of the parallel bar D. When the parallel bar is in position as shown in Fig. 3 it rests against the base shoulder 0 and against the bar A; and, beingsustained by the pivot bolt E, the arinis held rigidly in position until it is drawn up as above suggested. The bracket barA is provided with a series of slots f f arranged in pairs to receive the securing bolts g g by which the bracket bars can be secured to the frame work H of the desk.

I is a clamp bar applied within the desk and arranged to receive the bolts g g so that the frame work 1-1 of the desk is clamped between the bracket bar A and the clamp bar I. The upright member a is provided with a flange J arranged to fit against the top L of the desk and provided with holes j through which screws may be inserted to secure the flange to the top of the desk.- The horizontal or base member a is provided with a flange K adapted and arranged to fit against the back L of the desk and provided with holes 70 through which screws may be passed to secure the base member to the back of the desk.

Now having described my'invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combinationgymnastic attachment series of hooks or clamps adapted to receive 2 5 the dumb-bells, Indian club, &c., and provided with the double bracket having the pivot holes 6 and the base shoulder rest a; and the parallel bar having the slotted arm inserted with in the bracket, and the pivot inserted through 30' such pivot holes and the slot in the arm, and arranged to pivot the arm in such double bracket.
