v I J. STAHEL. DEVICE FOR LESSENING THE NOISE 0P FIREARMS.
No. 516,236. Patented Mar. 13, 1894.
' barrel d, a firing vented certain new UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAKOB STAHEL, OF WOLLISHOFEN, SWITZERLAND.
DEVICE FOR LESSENING THE NOISE OF FIREARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent 1893. SerialNo. 470234- (No model.) Patented in fiwitzerland December 21, 1892,110. 5,765,
Application filed April 13,
No. 516,236, dated March 13, 1894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAKOB STAHEL, acitizen Switzerland, residing at Wollishofen, near Zurich, in the canton of Zurich and Republic of Switzerland,-have inand useful Improvements in Devices for Lessening the Noise of Firearms; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear,
skilled in the artto which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a device for the purpose of reducing or tonations of firearms used in slaughtering catsuppressing the dottle in some cities; although it is equally applicable to firearms employed for other purposes, and for which I have obtained Letters Patent of Switzerland, No. 5,755, dated December 21, 1892.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a fire arm embodying my invention and fixed to the head of a steer which is to be butchered; and Fig.
2 represents a longitudinal section-of the '0 same.
' This fire arm is composed of a percussion ev1ce, a barrel and the means of destroying or greatly lessening the sound of the detonations. The said percussion device consists of a metallic socket a, which is screwed on the pin or plunger b driven through guide openings in the said socket into the cap of cartridge g in the breech end of the barrel, and a spring 0 within the socket for holding the said firing pin away from the and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others ;said chamber being pin is struck by the operator and driven in. To allow this drivingin, the outer end of the said firing pin normally protrudes through the outer end of the said socket. To allow the introduction of the carca'p until the said tridge into the barrel, the said socket is unscrewed and removed at will. The sounddestroying chamber e has the muzzle of the barrel d screwed into it, and is provided with an outlet opening in line with the said barrel, through which the bullet is discharged into the animals brain. The said chamber, being of considerably greater diameter and cubical capacity than the said barrel allows the expansion ot the gas generated by the burning explosive and stifles the sound. Straps f f may be employed for holding the fire arm to the animals head; but these obviously are not important.
Having thus described my invention, what Patent, is-' In combination with the barrel of a fire-arm and discharging devices, a sound suppressing hamber of greater diameter than the said barrel and attached to provided with an outlet opening in line with the said barrel for the passage of the bullet and closed at all other points substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afilx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAKOB STAHEL. Witnesses: Y

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
