Abstract

172,710. Brittain, J. H., and Perryman, L. W. Sent. 7, 1920. Projectiles. - A projectile for discharge from a smooth-bore gun is provided with tangential passages in a plane at right-angles to the axis of the shell and so arranged that the propellent gases or fluid from the gun escape therethrough when the projectile leaves the muzzle of the gun, and thereby cause the projectile to rotate on its axis. As shown in Fig. 7, these passages are formed by vanes c on a hollow portion a attached to the base of the projectile over a disc h by means of a screw-threaded centre piece k, which is made with holes d for the gases to flow through.
