UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. GUILFOYLE, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE-STOPP ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,478, dated December 12, 1893. Application filed May 11, 1893. Serial No. 473,305. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. GUILFOYLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, 7
reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention consists in an improved form of bottle stopper; particularly applicable to essence bottles. These bottles are used at soda water fountains, bars, by barbers, &c., and contain flavoring extracts for the beverages or mixtures. The bottle when in use is inverted by the operator and the contents sprinkled by shaking the bottle.
The object of my invention is to provide a stopper that will be cheap in construction and efficient in practice. Heretofore these bottles have been made with simple frictional stoppers which after a period of use become loose and either leak, wasting the extract or spilling the whole contents.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a vertical sectional view through the stopper and a portion of the bottle.
Ais the bottle; B a flexible ring preferably of rubber or like material adapted to attach the stopper to the bottle and C is the stopper;
The cap or stopper 0 is preferably made of porcelain, hard rubber, metal or glass and has the spout c, the recess cand the taper end 0 The stopper is hollow in the form of a thimble and is adapted to fit snugly over the neck of the bottle.
In placing the stopper in position it is pressed down until the recess 0 fits snugly over the flexible ring B, which is embedded or held firmly in the recess a, in the neck of the bottle at a suitable distance from the top, the taper end 0 being provided to compress the flexible ring B and to more readily assist the recess 0 of the stopper to its seat on the flexible ring B. This flexible ring B, is preferably simply sprung into its recess on the neck of the bottle but may be cemented to the bottle if so desired.
Between the stopper and the top of the bottle, I interpose a packing ring D, made of a suitable pliable substance to positively insure no leakage at this point from the contents of the bottle when the same is inverted foruse, the packing ring D being slightly compressed by the stopper when the same has reached its seat, so that a practically tight joint is insured between the stopper and the mouth of the bottle.
' I claim as my invention- The combination substantially as described of the cap or stopper 0, having recess 0, and
tube 0; the bottle or other vessel having the flexible ring B secured thereto with the packing ring D interposed between the stopper and the bottle or other vessel all for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- WILLIAM P. GUILFOYLE.
