D. O. LIVERMORE. SASH FASTENER FOR MEETING RAILS.
No. 509,922. Pa/qented Dec. 5, 1893.
Smeni o r, flan-W CV AFHING COMPANY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DARWIN O. LIVERMORE, OF LOS GATOS, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-FASTEN ER FOR MEETING-RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,922, dated December 5, 1893.
Application filed fieptember 30. 1891. Serial No. 407,283. (No model.)
To all whbm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DARWIN O. LIVER- MORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Gatos, Santa Clara county, in the State of California, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of sash fasteners, which are designed to be applied to the meeting-rails of window sash; and it is the object of my improvement, to secure a firm grip, or look, and at the same time, center the sash, regardless of the variations caused by shrinking, swelling, setting or warping.
I claim my purpose by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1. is a view of a central, vertical section, showing the entire device, and Fig. 2. is a view of the face, of the back catch, designed to be fastened in the usual manner to the central partof the meeting-rail of the back. or upper sash.
In Fig. 1. it will be seen that the lever (19) is provided with a hook (n). The fulcrum (e) may be adjusted in any suitable manner by which the lever when raised, will disengage the hook (n) from the back sash-catch (k). The hook (n) is so formed as to catch into the cavity (0) in the sash-catch (70.) when the lever (12) is brought down, and raise the catch firmly against the frame ((1) within which the lever (19) is adjusted,as shown at 1. and 2. in Fig.1.
It will be observed that the open space (m) (Fig. 2.) is made sufficientlylargeat the base, to allow for any ordinary variation in the alignment of window sashes. The hook (n) may therefore readily enter at the base, and, guided by the side lines of the opening, as it rises, it must center at the arch (l). The
dome of the cavity (0) is sufficiently high to clear the point of the hook (72), thus allowing the entire weight of the sash to be supported by the arch (Z), and the greater the weight the more firm and perfect will be the lock. As the outer end of the lever (b) is brought down, it engages with the pawl-ratchet (a) and by means of which it is held at any desired position.
The pawl-ratchet (a) is provided with a thumb piece (2') by which it is easily disengaged.
The spring (0) is suitably adjusted to the boss (1") which prevents any undue, lateral motion. One end bears against the cam (f) of the lever (19) and throws the lever upward, and holds the hook (11), out of the way of the sash, when disengaged. The opposite end of the spring (0) bears against the beveled, lower end of the pawl (a), causing the same to 111- cline inwardly, when not forced back by the lever (b). The spring (0) is held in its place by the bridge (h).
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Asash-fastener, comprising in its construction a chambered back-sash catch having converging walls, a front-sash plate or frame, a hooked lever fulcrumed therein and adapted to engage said back-sash catch, a pivoted thumb-rack adapted to engage said lever, and a spring adapted to hold said lever normally out of engagement with said backsash catch, and to hold said thumb-rack normally in position to engage said hooked lever, all substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
2. In a sash-fastener, a chambered back sash-catch having converging walls, a front sash-catch, a hooked lever fulcru med therein having a cam near its pivoted end, a pivoted thumb-rack adapted automatically to engage the free end of the lever, and a spring adapted to engage the said cam to hold the lever normally out of engagement with the back sashcatch, and to hold the said thumb-rack normally in position to engage the said lever.
DARWIN O. LIVERMORE.
