To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, EDWIN 'A. DONAT, citizen of the United States, residing at Lynnport, in the county of Lehigh .and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks, of which the following is a specificatlOIl; z i

In carrying out my invention I provide a base'l which is secured on top of the upper rail 2 of the lower sash. A look plate 3 is secured on top of the lower rail 4 of the upper sash. Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing show countersunk screw holes 5.
A latch 6 is adapted to be swung beneath a keeper 7 on the locking plate 3. The keeper 7 is an integral part of the lock plate and is bent about as shown in the first three figures of the drawing. The latch 6 has a finger piece 8 which is curved in such a manner that it may be readily pulled outwardly against the tension of a spring.
The latch 6 includes a short shank 9 by which the latch is connected to a spring case 10. It will be observed in the drawing, that the spring case 10 is closed on top and open at the bottom and that it does not quite touch the upper surface of the base 1. A

rivet 11 is firmly fixed on the dog plate 1 and the spring case 10 is mounted thereon. The head 12 -of the rivet 11 is located a short distance above the surface of a concavity 13 which is formedin the top of the spring case 10, as shown in Fig. 3.
The purpose of this space is to permit a small amount of rocking movement of the latch 6 and the spring case 1 0' on its pivot. This slight rocking movement is in a vertical direction and is necessary to obtain the release of the latch from a retaining lug when the locking dog is in the position shown in Fig. 2. i
The latch 6 is retained in the unlocked position shown in Fig. 2, by the Mg 14 which is struck up from the base 1 as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The lug- 14 is adapted to enter a slot 15. formed by striking up an' abutment lug 16 on the latch6. The latch 6 is pulled over oroutwardly by pulling on the finger'pieoe 8, when the lug 14 will spring into the slot 15 and engagethe abutment lug 16. The latch 6 is thus held in the unlocked position shown in Fig. 2 against the tension of a leaf spring 17 in the spring case 10. The spring 17 is secured at one end of the spring case 10 as shown in Fig. 2, and to the base 1 in any suitable manner as indicated at 18. It may readily be understood that the short space between the head 12 of the rivet 11 and the surface of the concavity 13, will permit a certain amount of play of the latch 6' and the spring case 10 so that the latch may readily pass over the lug 14.
A spring plate 19 is fastened to the end of the locking dog 6 opposite to the finger piece 8. The spring plate 19 may of course be stamped out of the metal of the latch or it may be formed in a manner other than that shown in the drawing. The plate 19 forms a fulcrum for the latch 6 when the latch 6 is acted on to lock the sashes together. This locking action may be either automatic or manual and is preferably antomatic. It will readily be understood that when the lower sash is pulled down to close the window, the plate 19 will strike the lock plate 3 and thereby tilt the whole latch 6 with ,its spring case 10 until the lug 14 is disengaged. The sprin 17 will then drive the latch 6 over beneath the keeper 7 and into engagement with the stop 20 thus auto matically lookingthe window sashes. Of course there :may be times when ,thejilatch 6 may have to be released manually. At such a time, the finger piece 8 is pushed upwardly the spring plate 19 then acting as a pivot, whereupon the lug 14: is released or disengaged in the same manner above described. The spring plate l9 is formed of a strip of material which is benttoform a substantially semi-circular portion thaving oppositely extending ends, one end being fixed upon the latch and the other end being free, thus allowing :the spring plate to: expand or contract. Therefore, when the latch engages thefkeeper, the spring plate will ifirm ly hold bherlibtcll'iln engagement with the keeper.

The operation of the sash lock is as followsn When the windowsashes Qan'd 4 :to which rthe-sash lock :is applied are unllocked, the latch :is :pulled to .the position shown in Fig.2. When the latch assumes the position indicated, the abutmentlug 16 ion'the latch 6 engages-the dug-1:4 on the base 1. The
lug 1 4: and 1ug16 are held tightly in engagement by :the tension of the spring 1-7 iw ith the sprlngcase 10.
While the construction and arrangement of the device as illustrated in the drawings is that of a generally preferred form, obviously modifications and changes therein maybe made :without departing from the spirit pf vthe invention or the "scope of the invention ,aslclaimed.
