Description
J. H. M's-GRADY. GAME APPARATUS Patefited Oct IN ENTUR;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. MOGRADY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAM E APPARATU S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,530, dated October 10, 1893.
Application filed May 19, 1893.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. MOGRADY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for detachably supporting a receptacle on the under side of a table, for convenience in gaming, as, for instance, for holding chips in a game of poker. By my invention, a receptacle suitable for this purpose may be quickly and easily attached to an ordinary table, and the means whereby this is accomplished do not interfere with the general use of the table.
To this end the invention consists in the novelfeatures of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention: Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a table with receptacle attached. Fig. 2 shows a sectional view, illustrating the manner in which the fastenings are engaged. Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of .the receptacle. Fig. 4 shows details of a keeper for attachment to the table.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, the letter m designates a portion of an ordinary table, to the under side of which, near one edge, are secured keepers, each composed of a'base-plate a, fitting against the tahle and receiving the securing-screws, and having a rectangular opening a in it, and an arched portion a The letter b designates an elongated receptacle, which may have its inner side either curved or straight, according to the style of table to which it is to be attached. On this inner side, at opposite ends thereof, are secured a pair of brackets c,having arms which project at right angles to the side of the receptacle and above the top of the same. Each arm has a resilient strip d secured rigidly at one end to its outer end. The strip is formed with a catch at, and extends on a curve, as shown, over the end-piece of the receptacle. When the receptacle is applied to the table, the arms of the brackets are introduced into the keepers on the table, and, upon shoving Serial No. 474,752. (No model.)
them into the same, the springs d are compressed; and then, when the catches d reach the openings a, they spring into the same and take against the ends thereof, which thus constitute shoulders. It will be seen that the engagement of the bracket-arms with the arched portions of the keepers and against the base-plates thereof causes the receptacle to be held stiftly, so as to be capable of properly supporting what may be placed in it.
The curved portions of the spring-catches project beyond the edge of the table, and, by pressing down upon them, the catches are released and the receptacle may be detached from the table.
Such an appliance will be found very convenient in playing games such as poker, where chips or counters are employed.
The end-pieces of the receptacle are slant ing on their upper edges, so as to give room for easy manipulation of the catches, and also for ready access to the receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'1. In combination with a table having keepers attached to its under side, a detachable receptacle provided with spring-catches adapted to be detachably engaged with the keepers on the table.
2. In combination with a table having keepers with internal shoulders, a detachable receptacle having rigid arms adapted to engage the keepers, and spring-catches attached to said arms and adapted to engage the internal shoulders of the keepers.
3. In combination with atable having keepers secured to its under side near one edge, each keeper comprising a base-plate having a rectangular opening, and an arched portion; an elongated detachable receptacle, having brackets fastened to the rear side and provided with arms projecting at right angles to the said side of the receptacle and adapted to engage the arched portions of the keepers on the table; and resilient strips rigidly fastened to the arms of the brackets, and formed with catches to engage the openings in the base-plates of the keepers and also of sufficient length to project beyond the edge of the table.
4. As improved articles of manufacture, fasenings fordetachablysupportinga receptacle name to this specification, in the presence of on the under side of a table, the same comtwo subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of IO prising a keeperhaving an internal shoulder; May, A. D. 1893. and a, bracket, having an arm for engage- 5 went with the keeper and a springstrip secured thereto and constructed for engage- Witnesses: ment with theinternal shoulder ofthe keeper. 0. F. BROWN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my A. D. HARRISON.
JOHN H. MCGRADY.
