C'. WEISS.
WORK BOX.
No. 470,728, Patented Mar. 15, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WEISS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WORK-BOX.
SPECIFIATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,728, dated 'March 15, 1892.
' Application iled October 27, 1891. Serial No. 409,945. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, CHARLES VEISS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Work-Boxes,of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled 1n the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved work-box represented as in position ou a table, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the box.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to a combination work-box provided with a secret drawer, a pincushion, and work-holder; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improve- Y ment will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation. s
In the drawings, A represents the box considered as a whole, and B the table. The box is preferably rectangular in form and is provided on its side walls with ornamental Work b, designed to make the faces of the box present t-he same general appearance. A drawer C is fitted to slide longitudinally in the box, the front of the drawer being ornamented to correspond with the opposite ends and fitted in its ways, so that when-said drawer is closed it is difficult to detect in which side of the box the drawer is located. The drawer when released is automatically thrown outward by a spring d, interposed between its rear wall f and a wall g of the box. A stop engaging said rear wall prevents the drawer from being entirely withdrawn. In the bottom of the drawer-case a horizontally-arranged lever t is pivoted to swing vertically and is provided with a shoulder j for engaging the lower edge of the drawer end f, forming a catch for locking said drawer within the case. The catch is held in engagement with the drawer by a push-spring m, elevating the free end of said lever. A vertical arm p is mounted on said free end of the lever, its upper end registering with an opening q, formed in the top 1' of the box. A guard-bar t holds said arm in position.
A pincushion D is mounted on the top r of the box and is surrounded by a cord or binding fu, which conceals the opening q.
In the base w of the box a horizontal socket x is formed. Said socket is adapted to receive one arm of a screw-clamp y, whereby the box may be secured to the table B to enable it to be employed as a work-holder.
The drawer C is designed for holding needies, small jewelry, or similar articles, and is opened by inserting a pin a in the opening q through the cord o and depressing the leverarm p. This frees the drawer from the catch j, said drawer being at once projected by the spring d.
When the box is clamped to the table B, the Sewing-work may be pinned to the cushion D and the device perform the functions of work-holders in the ordinary manner.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. A box having an opening in its top and provided on said top with a pincushion surrounded by a border of flexible material which conceals the opening from view, a' springpushed drawer in said box, and locking mechanism for said drawer, adapted to be released by an implement projected into the opening through the cushion-border, substantially as described.
2. VA box having an opening in its top and provided with a pincushion surrounded by a border which conceals the opening from view, a vertically swinging lever pivoted in the bottom of said box and provided with a shoulder for engaging` the rearpend of the drawer, a spring for elevating the free end of said lever, a vertical arm supported by said free end of the lever and registering with the opening in the top, and a guard for maintaining said arm in position, substantially as described.
