f ing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art yto which it appertains to make' and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a bedstead with cheap, simple and eifective means whereby the mattress support may be raised and lowered to assume different positions.

The invention consists in hinging the mattress supporting frame to one end of the bedstead and providing said frame at the other end with outwardly projecting arms to which are attached fiexible connections which lead to a drum carried by the head-board of the bedstead, said drum having means for locking the same against rotation, the axle of the drum passing through thehead of the bed so as to be operated by a crank from the front side of the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed outin the claim.

The upper portion of the head-board has attached thereto a frame E which forms bearings f'or a shaft e upon which is mounted la drum F. Thepshaftl of the drum is squared beyond one of its bearings, and beyond said squared portion it is reduced or key-ended for engagement with the socket of a removable crank-arm f, the head-board being provided with an aperture to permit of such engagement.

One of the upwardly projecting members of the frame E is slotted for the passage of a locking-bar g the lower end of which is cut away to tit over the squared portion of the shaft'. Near its upper end this locking-bar carries a spring, and a pin which projects through 'a slot in the head-board, so that by operating said pin the locking-bar maybe caused to engage and disengage the shaft of the drum or windlass. The spring attached to the locking-bar serves to hold said lockingbar in whatever position it may be placed.

h h designate brackets which are attached to the rear side of the head-board and are provided with hooks to which, pulleys are attached. To these pulleys, h h', are secured the ends of a liexible connection c', said iiexible connection extending from said pulleys around pulleys h2 h2 attached to the ends of the arms which project from the mattress supporting frame and from there back to and around the pulleys h h from which vit extends'to the drum and'is wound around the same in opposite directions.V It will be obvious that by this construction when the drum is turned in one direction the mattress supporting frame will be raised and when turned in the opposite direction said mattress supporting frame will be lowered. This device is especially adapted for invalid beds Where it is desired to change the inclination of the mattress supporting frame, and by the construction shown the mattress supportin g frame can-be raised andlowered from in front of the head-board.

- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y An invalid bed comprising a bed-frame the foot-board of which is provided with hooks b b and the rear side of the head-board support- IOO mattress section hinged at one end to the footboard upon the hooks b b and provided at the opposite end with arms D D which extend to the rear side of the head-board, sheaves or pulleys attached to the bracket-arms and to the ends of the arms D D, and Hexble conneetions fastened to the pulleys on the bracket-arms and passing around the sheaves or pulleys to the Windlass upon which they are ro Wound in opposite directions, the shaft of the Windlass extending through the head-board` of the bed-frame and having a squared p0rtion with which a catch engages, substantially as set forth.
