' N0.-5os,821. Patented Aug. 22, '1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD LOUIS WOHLGEMUTH, OF AMESBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,821, dated August 22, 1893.
Application filed February 21| 1893. Serial No. 463,168. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD LoUIs WoHL- GEMUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amesbury, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany! ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Y
My invention relates to improvements in brushes, and refers specially to a brush adapted for blacking stoves, shoes, or like purposes, and the object of my invention is the provision of a brush of simple, durable and inexpensive construction by means ot' which it will be impossible to soil the hands or apparel and which will be thoroughly efficient for the intended purpose.
To attain the desired object the invention consists of a brush embodying novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will appear from the following description and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a perspective View of my brush with the hand in position for using the same to illustrate the manner of employing the brush. Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 represents a transverse vertical section of the brush.
The body A of the brush is made of suitable length and width and has the upward turned end portion B, which carries the bristles C, forming the dip and the other portion of the body carries the bristles D, forming the brush 4o proper. In this manner I provide an efficient brush and a dip which is out of the way of the brush. A
Around the edge of the body is secured the strip Eforming a flange or edge, and between this iange and the stripor boardFis secured the edge of the cover G, which is made of iiexible material and extends preferably from one end of the body to the other and provides a complete cover or shield for the hand and wrist and prevents soiling of the person or garments, and on the top of the strip is secured the transverse piece II, which forms a rest for the ngers or provides a gripping portion and enables the person to use the brush with ease and facility.
From this construction it will be seen that I provide a brush which will completely cover the hand and form a holding or gripping portion and enable the operator to obtain the best results in the shortest time and without soiling the person or clothes; which is of simple, durable and inexpensive construction and entirely practical and useful.
I claim as my inventionl Abrush, consisting of the body having the strip forming a flange, the bristles secured to said body, the strip fitting within the iiange of the body and carrying a grasping piece, and the cover having the edge secured between the flange and strip.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD LOUIS WOHLGEMUTH.
