F. S. KBTGHUM. MARKING POT.
Patented Aug. 4, 18191.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
FRANK S. KETCHUM, OF NET YORK, N. Y.
MARKING-POT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,120, dated August 4, 1891. Application filed May 19, 1891. Serial No. 393,349. (No model.)
To all whom 1115 may concern:
Be it known that 1, FRANK S. KETCHUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the count-y of New Yorkand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovementsin MarkingPots; andl do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to marking-pots for shippers use in marking boXes,barrel-heads, and the like; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the marking-pot, the handle thereof being shown partly in perspective and partly in section. Figui) isa plan view of the same. Fig. 3 isa partial plan View of a modification of the device.
In the accompanying drawings like letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the body portion of the marking-pot, which is preferably in the form of the frustuln of a hollow cone, and B is the handle thereof, which is also for lightness and cheapness made hollow, and is secured to the body of the marking-pot near the top of the same and at one side thereof.
The top or upper edge of the body portion A is provided with an annular downwardlyconverging riin C, which is provided with an annular interiorly-notched brush-supporting rim and brush-cleaning rim D, which is preferably secured to the inner periphery of the converging annular rim C by clips E, F, G, and H, and is provided with dicrent-shaped interiorly-opening brush-holding notches I,
K,L, and M and an outwardly-converging V- shaped brush cleaner or wiper N, which also opens inwardly, as shown. This brush-holding rim C is made of rubber, and is consequently flexible; yet its resistance is sufficiently great when subjected to pressure either in cleaning the brush or in simply holding the brush up ont of the marking mixture or paint P to absolutely perform either of these functions. The shapes of 1the brush-holding notches and the brush-cleaner may be varied to suit brushes of different shapes and sizes, and in the modification shown in Fig. 3 two of the four notches are shown serrated, the object being to insure a firmer hold of the brush-holding rim. In this latter instance, too, the notched brush-holding rim is secured in place without the aid of clips in any wellknown manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Iu a marking-pot, the coinbination, with the body portion having an inwardly-projecting and downwardly-converging rim, of an annular notched rubber brush-holder and brushcleanersecured thereto by clips, substantially as specified.
2. In a marking-pot, the con1bination,with the body portion thereof, of a brush holder andcleaner consisting of an interiori y-notched annular rim of rubber,- substantially as set forth. y
The combination, in a marking-pot having the downwardly and inwardly con verging annular rim, of a rubber brush-holder or brush-supporter secured thereto having interiorly-disposed brush -holding notches, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK S. KE FCHUM.
Vitnesses:
HENRY J. ENNIs, GIDEON L. TooKER.
