SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,564, dated August 15, 1893. Application filed December 22, 1891. Renewed May 3, 1893. Serial No,472,911. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS WILLIAM DA- VIES, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in harness attachments, and it. consists in the novel features of construction which will be fully set forth in the following description and more particularly referred to in the annexed claims. I
The object of my invention is to provide an improvement in attachments for harness which complete the connection between the breechin g of the harness and the vehicle shaft without resorting to the necessity of wrapping the latter with the hold back strap, which is the ordinary way of making the connection. The particular advantages and the merits of my improvement will presently appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved attachment. Fig. 2, is a side view, showing its position in relation to the vehicle shaft.
A, represents a shaft tug of ordinary and Well known construction which depends from the side of the harness saddle in the usual manner for the reception of the thill.
13, represents a sleeve of sheet or spring metal, which is secured in position by means of a projecting stud or spur O, which extends through the outer side of the tug A, as shown. The sleeve is formed of a piece of metal which is curved to a circular shape as shown, its edges being nearly brought together on the inner side of the sleeve.
Formed upon the rear end of the sleeve B, and on opposite sides of the space between its adjacent edges are the loop openings D, and
secured in these openings by means of the straps E, is the loop F, to which the breeching of the harness is connected. The outer edges of the loop openings D, are bulged slightly outward so that the straps E, which are connected thereto may be flush with the inner wall of the sleeve B, and thereby prevent the said straps from being worn by friction against the vehicle shaft. The shaft is provided with a depending stop G, as shown in Fig. 2 against which the rear end of the sleeve bears, and the latter being connected to the brceching of the harness by means of the loop F, it will be seen that a backward pull may be had on the shaft, while the sleeve having a free forward movement does not. in any way impede the forward movement of the horse when he is being removed from the shafts. By means of the projecting stud O, I am enabled to readily remove the sleeve from the tug A, and attach it to any other tug of ordinary construction when so desired. The loop F, being on the inner side of the sleeve brings the pull exerted on the breeching on a direct line with the shaft and thus the sleeve is prevented from turning as it would do were the connection with the sleeve made at its top or its outer side. The straps E, being secured to the adjacent edges of the sleeve prevent the same from spreading when it is subjected to a heavy strain.
The device is simple in construction and can be manufactured at a small cost, and by its use the operation of hitching is greatly simplified.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a harness attachment, the combination with the harness tug, of a metallic sleeve formed of a single blank having its opposite sides curved inward, a connection between the sleeve and the tug, the rear end of the sleeve being constructed with loop openings near its adjacent edges, a forked loop secured to the said openings, the shaft, and a stop thereon, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a harness attachment, the tug, the sleeve, stud C, outwardly bulged loop openings D, a loop connected thereto, the shaft, and a stop thereon, the parts being combined, substantially as shown and described.
