T. E; WEST; CIGARETTE ox. No. 503,512. Patented Aug. 15, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE E. WEST, OF SOUTH NORWALK, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO JULIUS AUERBACI-I, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGARETTE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,512, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filedd'anuary 18, 1893- Sarial No. 8,858- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE E. WEST, a citizen of the United States, of South Norwalk, Connecticut, at present residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a box designed for containing cigarettes, and it consists in forming the box with the ordinary main receptacle for the cigarettes, and in addition thereto forming in the outside or cover an additional flap beneath which or in which is secured a row of matches. The row of matches may also be accompanied by a strip of sand paper or other suitable striking surface and the whole is covered within the extra flap.
In carrying out my invention I preferto make the cover as usual of asingle piece but, to add to the width sufficient to form the box, enough material to form the extra flap. Beneath this flap and pasted to the box is a row of matches preferably formed of slitted paper, the tongues of which formed by the slitting are slightly reduced in size at the ends in order to adapt them to receive the igniting composition. The strip thus prepared is pasted at its lower end to the box cover beneath the flap and over it is pasted a strip of sand paper. The box being thus prepared and it being desired to light a cigarette, a match is broken ofi and ignited by striking it on the sand paper.
The invention will be understood upon reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates in perspective a box constructed in accordance with my invention, and in which- 1 represents a box having a sliding tray 2, in which the cigarettes are placed in the ordinary way.
3 is a flap hinged at one side 4, of the box and having a tongue 5 which engages a slot 6 on the other side of the box for keeping the flap down in folded position. Beneath this flap and upon the face of the box is a row of matches 7 which are attached at the ends, being formed of a strip of paper or pasteboard slotted at 8, and pasted along the line of connection upon the box. Over the connected ends of these matches is pasted a strip of sand paper 9.
The operation has been explained. It will be seen that the box is provided with sufiicient matches to successively light the cigarettes while the same offer no material increase in the size or bulk of the box, as well as little expense in addition to the costof manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A cigarette box consisting of a tray and a cover in which the tray slides longitudinally, formed of a single piece of paper folded laterally around the box to form the four sides with open ends; said cover having mounted upon it a match package, and being perforated at one side adjacent to the side of the tray and having an integral extension which is folded at the edge opposite the perforation, to form a laterally hinging flap and which has a tongue adapted to enter the perforation and project between the tray and cover, to hold the flap in position over the match package, as explained.
THEODORE E. WEST.
