' To all 'wiwm'it may concern Be it known that I, Haney PHILLIPS, a

British subject, residing at McNally Buildings, Main Road, Randfontein, in the Province of the Transvaal, Union of South Africa, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Cartons for Cigarettes and the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cartons for small quantities of cigarettes and the like; the object being to provide cigarettes and matches for lighting them, in the same package.

The accompanying drawings show two forms of carton embodying the invention Figure 1 shows in perspective a carton consisting of a folder sliding in an outside case. Referring to Fig. 2 the cigarettes 3 are placed in a box 15 to which is hinged a lid 16. In this case the plane part of the lid is made of two superposed sheets, the part 17 of the inner sheet being fixed at its edge to the outer sheet to form the pocket 13, and

the other part of said sheet being hinged to form the flap 6. 18 is a tongue for lifting flap 6.

The advantage to a smoker, of having matches provided in the same package as the cigarettes will be apparent. A carton con-.

tically no more bulky than the ordinary one; andas the matches are concealed, the carton may, if the nature of the flap 6 is suitably disguised, be used as a trick device.

W hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2'- 1. A carton comprising a compartment for cigarettes or the like and having a side comprising two sheets n-joined at their opposite edges, one sheet being cut transversely to and between said joined. edges and thereby forming with the other sheet a pocket unopenahle at its sides and openahle at the out edge of the sheet and adapted to retain frictionally a single row of individually separate matches with their ends extending from said pocket. A carton for cigarettes and the like comprising a casing, a ioldersliding therein, one side of said casing being formed of two sheets whichin one part are joined at their opposite side edges and at their edges at one end, the outer sheet being cut transverselyto and between said joined side edges and forming with the inner'sheet a pocket openahle only at said out edge of the outer sheet and adapted to retain frictionally a single row of individuaily separate matches with their ends extending from said pocket, a part of the outer sheet being formed into a lifting flap to cover said extended edges (if the matches.
