SUPPORTING-STANDARD FOR PICTURES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,149, dated July 11, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARL H. LIEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supporting-Standards for Pic tures, of which the followingis a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in supporting standards for picture frames, photographs, mirrors and other similar articles and consists in a novel device for securing the standard to the article to be supported and will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheap device or attachment for picture frame standards, that may be applied to pictures and picture frames of variable and unequal sizes withequal facility.

Referring to the drawings illustrating my invention in which similar numbers and letters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1. is a perspective View showing the rear of the picture with my supporting standard attached. Fig. 2. isa detail view of the metallic T-f0rmed strip of the supporting standard. Fig. 3. is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4. is a View showing the manner of applying the strip to a large picture. Fig. 5. is a section of the same showing the bent ends passed through the slots of the backing of the picture to clamp the same. Fig. 6. is a perspective view of the clamping strip as applied to a single supporting standard. Fig.7. is aview showing the manner of cutting the securing strip to form the pivotal eye for the supporting standard, and Fig. 8. is an edge view of the strip showing the cut portion of the strip or tongue partly bent up in forming the pivotal eye for the supporting standard.

My device is particularly designed for securing the pivotal supporting standards to picture frames or pictures, and consists of a metallic strip 1. having pliable ends and extending across the back of the frame or picture and a downwardly projecting strip 2. also of a flexible material which is formed integral on or is firmly secured on the strip 1. inter mediate between the ends thereof, (see particularly Figs. 2. and 3.) said strips being readily secured to said frame or picture 3. by bending or folding the ends 4. 5 and 5*,by

the fingers over and around the edges thereof as shown particularly in Figs. 1. and 6. and in detail in Figs. 2. and 3.

Intermediate between the center and the ends 4. and 5. of the strip 1. and toward the bottom end of the strip 2. are'formed the eyes 6. 7 and 8. and integral therewith and will be hereinafter more fully set forth. In these eyes are pivoted the bent ends 9. and 10 of the supporting standards 11. and 12. and the latter eye is adapted to pivotally receive the bend of the locking brace 14. The ends of the brace 14 are bent to form the eyes 15 and are adapted to loosely receive the wire stand-. ard 11 to maintain it in its stable position, said brace 14. held in its locking position .by means of the stops16 formed on each of the members of the standard 11 at a suitable distance above the lower end thereof.

On the inner top ends 9.and 10. formed on the standards 11. and 12. are also formed the .inner bends 17. and 18. which are bent upwardly and arranged to contact with the strip 1. by which means the limit of the inclination of the supporting standards 11. and 12 is fixed. These forms of bends are particularly applicable to the form of supporting standard illustrated in Fig. 6. which is applicable to light pictures as photographs, &c., in which case the downwardly projecting strip 2. is dispensed with as is also the counter and looking brace 14. and the single supporting standard 12. is substituted.

When large pictures are mounted in a frame having a backing as 17 attached to the back thereof, as shown particularly in Figs. 4. and 5.and it is not desirable to have the bent ends 4. and, 5. of the strip 1. exposed to view on the face of the frame, the backing 17. has the slots 18 formed therein and into which the ends of the strip 1. are inserted and bent over and between the picture and the backing as shown clearly in Fig. 5.

The eyes 6. 7. and 8. formed in the strips 1. and 2. are first formed by punching or otherwise cutting three rectangular cuts shown at a. in Fig. 7. to form a tongue, the end of which is bent and curled over in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 8 till the ends thereof contact with the strip to form the eye or loops 6. 7. and 8. as clearly shown in the drawings.

To apply the standard to a picture frame IOC or cardboard whereon the picture is mounted, the stripsrl. are; applied to thebacks thereof and their ends 4. and 5. are bent or folded over the edges of said pictures or backings thereof to clamp them as clearly illustrated in the drawings and needs no particular description.

Having thus fully described the nature and construction of myinventiomwhat I claim as.

In a picture support, the combination, with the "l -shaped flat strip provided with bent ends adapted to clip the picture and having eyes 6, 7 and 8 formed of portions of the said strip partially cut away and bent around as set forth, of a wire standard having horizontaliportions at its upper end journaled in the said eyes 6, and 7, upwardly-bent stop- ,portions, adapted to, bear against the said strip, and the stops 16,andthe brace 14 journaled in the eye 8 and having eyes 15 loosely encircling the wiresof. the standard, substantially as set forth.
