PATENT OFFICE.
LINDSLEY H'. SMALLEY, OF COON RAPIDS, IOWA.
BOOT FOR ANIMALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,968, dated July 4, 1893.
Application filed March 7, 1893. Serial No. 465,034- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINDSLEY H. SMALLEY, of Coon Rapids, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Boot for Animals, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved boot, more especially designed for use on legs of horses and other animals, and arranged to enable the animal to conveniently withdraw the foot from a barb wire or other obstruction.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out p in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged rear view of the same detached.
The improvement consists principally of one or a series of rollers A, attached to the animals foot below the fet-lock, as illustrated in Fig. 1. I prefer to mount the roller or rollers on a rodB secured at its ends to keepers O fastened on the bootproper, D,connected by straps and buckles E in the usual manner to the foot, as shown in Fig. 1. I The rollers A are thus arranged below the fetlock, so
' that the animal after having passed the foot overa barb wire or other obstruction, can conveniently withdraw the foot, as the barb wire will then not come directly in contact with the animals foot and injure it, but the rollers will readily roll off of the barb wire as soon as the animal pulls back with the foot, whereby the foot readily glides over the barb wire without being injured.
I do not limit myself to any particular construction of the roller or rollers, as I may arrange the same in the shape of a piece of heavy rope or strong rubber, or metal buttons or other similar devices fastened below the fetlock. The boot proper, D, may be made of leather, canvas or other suitable material in one or more parts as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a boot for animals constructed to fit the animals leg below the fet-lock, said boot extending from the fet-lock to the hoof, and provided with fastening devices, and with one or more rollers arranged horizontally on the outside of the boot and between its upper and lower edges, as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a boot for animals constructed to fit and be secured to the animals leg below the fet lock,a horizontal rod on the boot, and a plurality of rollers mounted on the said rod, as set forth.
LINDSLEY H. SMALLEY.
Witn esses HENRY WALLACE, GEO. ARMENTROUT.
