B. A. LEONHAR-D.
QUARTER BOOT ,FOR HORSES. No. 339,995. Patented Apr. 13, 1886.
WITNESSES: IIVVEIVTOI? W, Ma MVMMM @QMJZ v 1% Wm ATTORNEY N. PETERS mn-Litho n iwr. wanm tou. D c,
UNITED STATES EMIL A. LEONHARD,
OF DAYTON, OHIO.
QUARTER-BOOT FOR HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,995, dated April 13 1886.
Serial No. 180,373. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL A. LEONI-IARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Quarter-Boots for Horses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in quarter-boots for horses, in which the boot consists of two parts or sections cut out of a single piece of leather. The upper serves to protect the pastern-joint and the lower the heel against blows from the toes of the hind feet, said sections being buckled independently about the said parts.
The accompanying drawing is a front view of the quarter-boot.
The part or section A has acircular lower edge, with the exception of the part 0, which extends about midway into the lower part or section, B. At T T a small portion is cut out, to render the under surface slightly concave. The upper edge is likewise circular, with the corners rounded off. This part is lined with chamois-skin, I, which projects above the upper edge thereof and serves to prevent irritation of the pastern-joint.
E is the strap holding the buckle, which is sewed to the upper right-hand corner, and to the opposite corner is sewed the strap D, with holes to engage the buckle.
The part or section B has a circular edge of greater diameter than the upper section, and the lower edge is curved somewhat from a straight line from point to point. This section is lined with a light but firmer skin, and extends behind the part 0, as indicated by dotted line at L. The other dotted lines of the drawing illustrate the stitching.
At the right end is attached the strap G, that holds the buckle, and on the opposite end is the strap F, with holes for attachment to the buckle.
I am aware that quarterlooots for horses have been constructed with sections flexibly connected, similar to that herein described; but the connections were sewed on and were liable to rip, and to offer an obstruction which would be hit in over-reaching, and tend to the destruction of the boot. In my construction, with one piece of leather, a broad smooth piece of leather which is sufficiently flexible is present for contact with the hind foot.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
In a quarter-boot for horses, the section A, with extension 0 and section B, cut out of one piece of leather, and independent fastenings to bind the upper section about the pastern-joint and the lower section about the hoof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMIL A. LEONHARD.
