SAMUEL F. PRAY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, ABRAHAM S. ADLER, AND JAMES M. CLEMENT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,660, dated May 23, 1876 application filed April 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. PRAY, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,c1ear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in,the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to shoes, having for its object to improve the construction of the same by providing a combined welt, stay, and protector between the right and left quarters of the heel-seam, as hereinafter more fully described. 7
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a rear view of the quarters with my invention attached; and Fig. 2 is a section through line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of same.
A represents the two quarters, and B the welt, stay, and protector.
In the manufacture of shoes, the part B is folded and placed between the quarters, and
stitched on the inside of the quarters, as seen at a a, Fig. 2, leaving a part of the same on the outside of the quarters, which is pressed down, so that a part comes over each quarter, as shown in Fig. 1. After this part B is pressed down on the outside there may be two rows of stitches, as shown in Fig. 1, if desired; but the invention may be used without these outside stitches, if desired.
By this invention I provide a welt, stay, and protector for the heel-seam by using only one seam of stitches necessarily; but three seams may be used, if preferred, and .the welt, stay, and protector is allin one piece.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combined welt, stay, and protector for the heel-seam of a boot or shoe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
